    Default Vr Start up problem

I have recently picked up a vr Calais. it currently has a bit of a problem when i try to start it up. if i prime the fuel pump once and try to start it will try to kick over for about 5-6 seconds before it starts, but if i prime the fuel pump 2-3 times and pump the fuel with the accelerator a few times the car will start up almost instantaneously. What would i have to change to get this slight problem fixed. The starter motor and spark plugs have recently been changed within the last month. Also, this will only happen after the car has been left to sit for a while. if i turn on the car and turn it back on within 15 minutes the car will start up straight away.

    thanks in advance

Check to see if it blows black smoke when it first fires up after not starting. If it does, its probably got leaking fuel injector(s) or a stuffed fuel pressure regulator. When the fuel pressure regulator stuffs up, it lets fuel flow straight into the inlet manifold through the regulator vacuum hose, causing the hard starting etc. Id also check the air filter, and if its old, replace it. Same with the fuel filter. If the injectors turn out to be the problem, the link below shows a set of brand new injectors available on ebay. Ive been running these injectors in my VSV6 for 8 months now, and theyre still going good. They are way cheaper than brand new bosch brand injectors, and they dont hurt performance at all. Remanufactured/reconditioned injectors will never flow as good as brand new ones do anyway, all these injector reco places do is match them up so the set of injectors all flow within 1 or 2% of eachother, but as I said before, they wont flow as good as brand new ones, I was told all this by a couple of EFI places when I was looking into getting my injectors recoed. This is why I went with the brand new ones in the link. Ive also noticed after helping mates fit reco injetcors, that the reco ones dont make much noticable difference to how the car runs etc.

just went out to check, doesn't seem to be any black smoke coming from the back of the car.

tried to start the car up this morning, turned the keys from on to off about 4-5 times tried to start the car, the car kept cranking but seemed like it was trying to start but it
couldn't, tried cranking again and it did the same thing then on the third attempt started straight away, you guys got an clues to what is going on? is it still possible to be the fuel regulator?

mate the pump itself is around $200 so with labour you could be looking at $500 plus, but if your a keen DIYer it can be done in around an hour with a few simple tools and a bit of patience

Steer clear of Goss fuel pumps as many on this forum have had probs with them....someone said Bosch was the go.

thanks for the info guys. Do you actually reckon labour would be $300+ if it is said that is able to be done in under an hour at home? im asking this because i dont have the mechanical knowledge on how to change a fuel pump.

Ring around and get a few quotes if you are not mechanically savy, I've done a few myself, easy job essentially but a PITA fitting the actual sender unit back into the tank.
If you would like to see do a search on fitting a pump.

My suggestion is that if you are not confident you can do work on a car, get a mechanic to do it, it might be cheaper in the long run!
Alternatively, buy a workshop manual. Hell, buy two.

    hey guys

im going to jump in on this as i was just about to put up this topic till i seen this

my vr has sat for 12months and gone to start and its a B***H to start once its kicked over it runs ruff and idles like crap ive just changed the fuel pump and filter and injector cleaner through it and it still is a pain to start

starter motor and alternator is fine all fuses fine but yea i thought it was a fuel issue but she blows smoke its a auto but yea i agree with the presure regualtor or the fuel injectors stuffed after seeing the replys thats my next step of attack but your not alone on this and new fuel pump from recpo's is 95bucks and you can do it your self but try a new pump and filter and injector cleaner that helped for 10min anyway lol but then yea youd be up for new fuel injectors and presure regualr possibley
