Afternoon all.
maybe someone here can help.
i have an issue where im losing water, roughly the reservoir gets empty after 3 or 4 weeks. than needs a refill. about 500k's of driving.
i have a small amount of oil in my radiator, no water in my engine or trans. but as i said im losing water.
im leaning towards a head gasket as i may have split the gasket between water gallery and cylinder, hence no water in oil but losing water out the exhaust (water injection back yard style lol) though it doesn't explain the oil in the radiator.
motor runs fine, little miss here and there but i have not done plugs and cap and button for 12 months. so im guessing its needing the ignition side of things serviced.
has anyone heard of this problem and have a solution before i rip the heads of to cheack the gasket? big job to do just so i can clear my mind on head gasket.
if it was a radiator split where the trans cooler is than wouldnt oil go in the trans? not sure.
all help is appreciated.
cheers
ricky
ps: also noticed this thread Oil in vt 5l radiator had head gasket check seem ok !! Help !!
but theres no conclusion to his issue.
How about checking the inlet manifold first?
i have thought of that but im only reading ppl having issues with the v6 inlet. not reading anywhere thats talking about the v8 inlet manifold having issues.
will pull it of tomorrow if i can sort out some gaskets of holden, i get trade at bursons but rob in carrum downs was telling me that the factory holden inlet gaskets are better. so i will ring them in the morning and get some.
You say in part: "(water injection back yard style lol)" .........I've seen water injection units cause some crazy things - a mate of mine had his unit drain into the cylinders overnight and next morning when he went to start the car it started to turn and BANG....bent the conrods due to hydraulic lock. So I'd be looking there first.

i dont have water injection in my car.
im saying if its a leaking head gasket from the water jacket to the cylinder than thats where my waters going from my radiator. it definatly wont fill the cylinder and cause compression lock.
In that case, just unscrew all the plugs and see if one or two appear to have different deposits on them - usually it will be fluffy black stuff - that might give you a clue as to whether it is a head gasket problem. You could also be losing coolant from the heater unit under the dash which is a known fault in Commodores...also the heater tap can leak...cracks in radiator side tanks can be impossible to identify sometimes till they leak really bad....water pump leak also can be hard to identify till it's bad....radiator cap may be leaking slightly. Problem is that the coolant evaporates before you notice it.
By the way, if a head gasket or cracked head is leaking coolant into a cylinder, I wouldn't bet on it not filling the cylinder overnight.
