I had a SIMILAR prob with my VR V6, t'was the DFI (direct fire ignition) module under coil pack assembly, in MY case. $240 for sparky to diagnose and replace offending unit.
In tank fuel pumps on these older cars do get tetchy with age and should not be run with less than 1/4 tank of the wet stuff.
The dash gauges are also prone to sticking, give the pad a thump

Has the fuel pump been replaced lately...if so was it done correctly with attention to the fuel return hose and fuel gauge float unit. Bad fuel?...water in fuel?.....wiring to fuelpump/gauge damaged/squashed etc.

DFI unit is the small flat panel (with a fat plug off its lower side) that the coil packs actually attach to
