Default Help appreciated to identify rogue unattached water pipe under dash [VR Caprice]

    Hi Everyone,

I've just purchased a 1994 Holden Caprice V8, the car has just passed the roadworthy and I am now attending to the smaller issues that exist, the main one for the interior is a rogue water pipe coming out of the aircon/heater box on the drivers side.

It looks like the old owner has done a dodgy with it and just placed any hose that will fit on there, however with the amount of water dripping out of it on a constant basis, it seems like it may be some kind of drainage outlet. From searching the forums there is a few mentions of a drainage pipe that exits below the car, however the length of hose currently used on this outlet means it can only drain out onto the floor of the car.

I've attached a few photos of the location and the pipe itself, along with where it attaches to the ac/heater box under the dash. Any help is extremely appreciated as I am new to these cars and my past involvement was only with Geminis and Nissans (please don't shoot me for it lol)

Hi Mate, not real sure on this one, it doesn't look like my VS under there. I think you may be right about it being the air con condensation overflow. I can check out my car and workshop manual in the morning, and post back any info I come up with.

By the way, it is a rogue pipe. Rouge is something your grandmother would have put on her cheeks to make herself beautiful for your Pop

Yep, realised this as soon as I hit post, but because of the moderator approval I didn't get a chance to edit before it went live, all sorted now

just had a bit of a look at my car and realised what it was.

it is the outlet for the venturi that pulls air over the inside air temp sensor. air is blown through from the heater box out of that length of hose. it then draws a vacuum through that convoluted tube that clips onto the back of the climate control unit.

the water will be coming out of it because the proper drain will be blocked. common problem. its under the car, passengers side towards the front of the gearbox. long cable tie, coathanger etc should do the trick. should be a few threads on here that are a bit more detailed.

Yeah my dads VR Statesman V8 has that exact pipe, so it has to be genuine. His was leaking hot water on his foot while driving, so he unblocked it as wamboin23 has described. I can't see this pipe on my VS though so they might have changed it from VR to VS.

Excellent, thanks wamboin23 and superchargedvs6 for your knowledge and advice. Will put the car up on stands once it cools down a bit and get it sorted out. Very glad it's only a minor issue and not a failure of the system itself.

There was a service fix for these when new which involved drilling a hole about the size of a ten cent piece in the passenger side of the heater box down near the drain, it was only done when owners complained of water on their feet so not all will be done. If it has been done there will be a rubber grommet in the box on the passenger side down near the bottom. You can remove this grommet and access the box to clean out any gunk from the drain tubes.

Cheers for everything guys, I was installing a head unit today so decided it's probably a good time to check the problem out, fjwb thank you for telling me about the rubber grommet, it was indeed there and gave me direct access to the drainage point, put a coat hanger all the way down and a mass of water came flowing out under the car.

Honestly guys thank you so much for your advice it made solving the problem dead easy

it loos like the moisture drain for the ac, should be going into the carpet and through a hole in the trans tunnel.
