When I change back through the gears, there's a rattling noise coming out from under the car - it sounds like a piece of tin flapping (no, it's not the number plate!). It happens at both high and low revs, in all gears.
And when going up through the gears there's sometimes a similar one-off noise (a tinny clunk).
Gear change is fine though, going up and down the gears.
Since the noise started I've taken the drive shaft out and replaced the CV joint and centre bearing (which got rid of some other noises) - and while under there I checked everything I could feel but nothing seemed loose. The rod from the gear lever has some play, but that didn't seem abnormal - I don't know what's at the other end of the rod and I don't want to pull the whole box out to find it may be something simple, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's something in that area.
Any ideas???
Thanks
It's probably something to do with the clutch throw-out arm/lever and the springs that hold it in place....others will chime in no doubt with exact details.

A couple of possibilities, one, check the cat, give it a hit and see if it rattles. Two, have a look at the pin on the side of the muffler and see how close it is to the lower control arm, changing down will throw the engine the opposite way to accelerating and can move the exhaust over so that pin vibrates against the control arm.
It turned out to be the universal causing the noise (the drive shaft must have been rattling around) - I changed the CV and centre bearing as well, so the beast has lost it's old familiar rumble (or maybe grumble).....
