    Default Ecotec knock sensor

Hey guys, i just found out what iv been wondering for a long time, those to contraptions on the side of the motor. Apparently their knock sensors. The ones on my current motor arnt in good shape, the plastic trumpet looking parts are broken. Could this cause any problems? I doubt it would be the cause of a short term fuel trim but would it cause anything else, no other error codes are produced. See attached photos for what im on about.

there is another one on the otherside of the motor. They are only really used as a warning for the ecu to recognise any internal knocks which in turn shows up as an engine warning light.

They detect pre-ignition which occurs when the ignition timing is too far advanced - the actual ignition timing is constantly being changed by the ECU with the ideal setting just before it pings or pre-ignites (or knocks). A fault code check will detect if they're buggered which is unusual.
