Hey guys, I'm converting my Auto Calais to Manual and would like some insight / advice.
I went on a road trip to pick up my gear, it was the full conversion with every nut and bolt. Even came with the shifter boot :P
My only concern is that it was out of a VN. The owner wasnt real sure, but he thinks it was a series two.
The flywheel only has 6 bolts. So obviously it was a series 1?
Anyhow i would like to know the better options and possibilities:
- Use the manual ECU and loom that came with the conversion
- Use my Auto ECU and rewire the loom + get my memcal tuned
- Spend the money on the impossible to find VR Manual ECU/Loom
Cheers,
Jake
Hardest part will be finding that 8 bolt flywheel really. Use the manual loom and ECU because it's all the same from VN to series 1 VS.
Welcome to the internet where people have opinions that you might not like
Thanks man. Thats the kind of information i was after.
Yeah i've been looking around .. May have to bite the bullet and buy a brand spanka.
in the last 2 days I put in my vr calais
a VN S2 engine and gearbox
used vr engine loom with vr auto ecu, only major rewiring was: (cutting purple/white wire out of plug completely) - but try splice is first, if speedo still doesn't work, cut it and join directly to speed sensor. purple/white wire from plug in the kick panel. I had 2 spare wires left over which were near the speedo sensor / reverse light loom and swapped some wires around from the behind kick panel(sounds complicated) but when you find which wires they are, saves you running extra wires through tunnel etc. etc.

So would that option be easier than swapping out my VR ECU and Auto loom with the VN Manual ECU and loom ?
Cheers,
Jake.
for me, if i used the vn manual loom and engine loom, than i would need to change the dash loom, and i won't have all the security, and digital etc.. but i kept my dash loom, kept my auto loom, and kept my engine loom all from the vr
i think its better to keep your vr ecu loom and auto loom, cut some plugs off the auto loom at attach to gearbox speed sensor / reverse lights (there will be plenty of spare wires not being used on the auto loom that you can relocate the wiring on the ecu plugs, saves you running new wires through the tunnel to get the speedo working, you just need to find and trace the correct wires that you want to use back to the ecu, cut the required wires from the ecu loom off, and attach to the purple/white wire from a plug (pictured above)
some will say it (sounds) dodgy, but if done neatly it still looks just as professional and unnoticed
this is my first ever car conversion, in fact, i have never taken a engine and/or gearbox out by myself before, but followed a lot of instructions, and got minor advice off my brother who is an auto electrician
you can also use a product called speedo healer V4. It will convert the manuals signal for the auto ecu and speed sensor will work. needs to be special ordered from their site.
HealTech Electronics Ltd. - Makers of the SpeedoHealer, GIpro, X-TRE, FI Tuner Pro, OBD Tool
easy to fit up as well.
sent you pm mate
Thanks a lot guys.
I cant do anything at the moment until i get my hands on that 8 bolt flywheel.
Ill just throw some pictures up![]()
Got quoted $220 + $30 postage for an 8 bolt manual flywheel second hand.
The selector shaft seems to be jammed inside the cover plate :/
I cant get it out .. Any ideas?
Cheers,
Jake.
the auto rod that goes to the trans?
Its a manual gearbox.
There's a shaft that attaches to the gearstick and goes into the gearbox to operate the selector forks.
Alright the selector shaft is out but its bent, does anyone know if a transmission place will replace these ?
I live 2.5 hours away from any sort of shop like that so its a bit difficult to inquire.
Cheers,
Jake.
