    Default turbocharging vr ute

i am in the stage of thinking about turbocharging my vr ute. i have a spear t3 turbo that i am thinking to use. i was wondering if any one could tell me if a t3 turbo would be fine for the engine. if the 3.8 Buick would be fine with out a tune? and how much power gain would i be looking at.

if anyone has turbo charge a buick befor could you please leave a post with all the thing you had problems with and thing i might have to watch out for when doing it thank you

Of course you will need a tune. T3 should be fine. I am sure if you did a google search you will find it's been done plenty of times before.

Which t3 turbo? T3 is just a flange.

You will need t3,custom exhaust manifold adaptors to suit reversed standard manifolds and t3,rising rate fuel reg, aftermarket engine management and tune, plumbing, cooler, run low boost and you should have responsive power maker given that engine is in good health!

a lot of work that needs to be done re: VS6AutoDim's post... you'd hope to keep the car long enough to make it worth while lol.. wish I could do that, but have to get a roadworthy for my vr calais before I can go too crazy

As stated, t3 is just a flange, you want to find out what AR ratios the compressor and exhaust housings are. I have a turbo vr ute its running a T3/T4 .63 exhaust and .50 compressor. It is the BEST you can get for this motor, it starts to spool at 1800rpm and full boost (10lb) at about 3000 ish.

A tune is a MUST, you'll need to find someone who does dyno tunes for boosted commodores near you. Forget the rising rate fuel shit, get a 2 bar map sensor and get it tuned with that properly.

You will need (from what comes to mind)

    -Custom exhaust manifolds
-A new custom 3" dump pipe
    -Oil lines for turbo
-A drain line bung welded into your sump
    -Intercooler and piping
    -BOV
-Wastegate (if not internal w/g turbo)
-Bigger injectors (I have bosch 968 42lb greens)
    -Walbro fuel pump
-Id recommend bigger front brakes if not already done
-Lots of heat wrap on all exhaust components
-Bonnet vents go a long way too (heat is crazy with a turbo)
-A turbo bag is a must also
-You will need to emiliminate your PCV setup and run breathers in rocker covers or run to catch can OR to be legal re-plumb the pcv system (however Im not sure exactly how, as I havent and dont really care)
-An electronic boost controller is really good, however a manual one would be fine if tight for funds

Can't think of anything more, but there will be more.

There is a lot of work in it, but well worth it. The power gains are immense and the sound... well it's just amazing.

If the motor is in relatively decent condition 8-10psi (if very well tuned) should last you a while and give plenty of power. Just make sure all exhaust flanges are true or you'll get leaks, and they really #### you for power..
