The VR has the electronic version of the 4L60 gearbox which is why it's called 4L60E and has no kickdown cable - VN and VP have a kickdown cable and are 4L60. I think they can be made to fit by the addition of the kickdown cable etc., but there are others on this forum that have better knowledge of this. I think most people just fit another VR box to avoid the hassles....there are plenty around.

I had a look at the link that wraith provided - seems you need the kickdown cable plus a manual ECU so I'd figure it to be a bit of a risk to me unless I could get the box for free....then again if you have access to the original kickdown cable maybe it could be made to fit??? Nothing is impossible. Another problem is that it takes a full weekend of blood sweat and swearing to put the new box in...plus about $60 for oil and filter etc. so it's something you don't want to do again.
Is the old box completely dead?

Also another problem with VR's I found. 2 different gearboxes 4HDD and 5HDD. Holden gearboxes are common so I wouldn't bother trying anything but like for like.

Agrred, and try that when your pushing 70 and lying under the car, your back is killing you and you're covered in oil and crap....you get to wonder "maybe I should have not been such a tight-ass and paid the $700 or so to get a mech to fit it", then reality kicks back in and you mentally convert the $700 to 20+ slabs of icy cold XXXX and it's all worth it. Apart from saving the cash, you can get an immense sense of satisfaction when the job is finished - a bit hard to put a price on that.
