Default head rebuild when changing cam

Is it essential to change valves and springs when changing cams i have no problems with my heads at the moment and I'm not going to wild with the cam just unsure about spending the $1500 to rebuild the heads

Your cam provider should have told you.

Mild is usually ok on stock springs with stock redline.

If compression is good you should be fine.

if the cam is too aggressive for stock springs it will valve bounce near redline.

a good mechanic can upgrade your springs later without the need to remove the heads if need be.

rule of thumb is stage 1 cams dont require springs, stage 2 its usually recommended to upgrade the springs but isnt essential, stage 3 must upgrade and stage 4 which everyone dreams of requires upgrading every bloodything in there to match.

I'd do the springs regardless but it shouldn't cost 1500 maybe they are porting your heads while they're off

springs really depends on the cam.

You also need to take into consideration the age of your components. valve springs that have done 200,000km's will have lost a fair bit of pressure...

I can take my springs off myself with a $50 Kincrome Overhead Valve Spring Remover. That $1500 had better include a port and polish, new springs, seals, 3-angle grind, retainers and locks.

You could go for exchange heads that already have the valves, seats, guides, seals and springs done.

For v6 you can exchange them for 580 all done, so i wouldnt think v8 heads would be that much more? Maybe enquire?

    $550-600 should get you:

    - disassemble
    - wash head
    - bead blast
    - crack test
    - seats cut (3-angle MINIMUM)
    - valvles ground
    - valve height tipped
    - springs checked for seat pressure at installed height
    - head faced
    - new valve stem seals
    - re assemble

If it needs valvle guides then bit more on top. If your head has never been recoed then i doubt it will need valves replaced. Put up specs of cam, dur @ 0.050" and lift.
