    Unhappy vr v6 running rough

hi every one im new to this great site and your help would be great
I just brought a VR V6 commadore and it is running rich and rough. I noticed
on the extractors there is a O2 sensor and it is not connected and it has only 1
purple wire. Would this be the right sensor for a VR and if it is where does it connect to?

I think you have answered your own question, without the O2 sensor your car will stay in closed loop making it run rich. as for the wiring pass. I have a vs.

I think you mean open loop. When in closed loop the ECU is using the o2 sensor readings to adjust the fuel trims.

Definitely sounds like a O2 Sensor problem.

First of all check error codes following these instructions:
    Checking error codes VR/VS (Revised)

For the VR i was aware that the O2 sensor is located just before the Cat Converter. These are 4 wire Oxygen sensors as they have a heating capability.
The location of the O2 sensor you described is not operating at all, the two wire O2 sensors i thought were on VS models and up.
There should be two, one on each header/extractor.

    Cheers,
    Jake.

Code 13 is oxygen sensor (open circuit). I always thought that the VSV6 was the first to use the 4 wire heated 02 sensors and use 2 sensors, one in either engine pipe, and that the VRV6 used 1 sensor and are the 2 wire type.

Are you sure your car is a VR? there are subtle differences between the two.

Most vs's had 4 wire, very early ones had two wire.
Most vr's had 2 wire, late ones had 4 wire.

I just had a look at the wiring diagram in the VR gregories workshop manual, and it shows that the VR uses the 4 wire type oxygen sensor. Theres 1 Pink/blue wire, 1 Violet wire, and 2 Black wires coming from the sensor accoding to the diagram..Theres no mention of the VR using a 2 wire oxygen sensor.Usually the gregories manuals have a supplement section at the back that will show any alternative diagrams or parts changes etc to account for any changes made during the model life.
I just always assumed that the VR used the same 2 wire sensors as the VN and VP's.

Why did late VR's have a 4 wire, while early VS had 2?

The only explaination I can really think of is that oxygen sensors have to get to a certain temperature before they work, so they used 2 wire non heated type sensors,( which are probably cheaper), and moved these sensors location closer to the engine on the VS, which in theory, should make the sensors heat up faster and start working quicker, they also added the second sensor to the opposite exhaust pipe on the VS, maybe they thought they wouldnt have to run the heated sensors with these changes theyd made, then they later found out that the non heated type didnt work properly, and the heated ones were needed afterall ,so they went back to the heated type 4 wire ones again.

The first VS's definitely had 2 wire type, and then they went back to the 4 wire type. The 2 wire VR ones though, I cant find anything about them, just the 4 wire ones. .

VN's had one black wire going to their O2 sensor until November 1990 when a tan earth wire was added. The sensor I replaced in my 10/1990 V6 had one black wire, the sensor earthing through the exhaust system. Got this info from a Gregory's manual for a VN.
