Default serious gearbox whine. Getrag 5sp

    hey guys

done a l67 conversion in my vs ute around 3 weeks ago. All sweet so far excpet the getrag is seriously whining know.I no everyone will say that getrags whine in general and yes it did used to have a whine but know its gone crazy. its so loud to the point i can hear it over my stereo. Even before the l67 went in it was the noisiest getrag ive heard. It has around 300,000 km on it so it is getting old.

Is my box buggerd? Ive checked oil and it only took about 100ml so its got plenty in there. It still feels fairly tight considering the type of box it is and shift qaulity is still smooth.

there are 3 nuts on the gearbox.
    1: bottom, to drain
    2. on the side near were it says getrag. i assume this is to fill untill it over flows out to show its full
    3. another one to the top left looking from the driver side door?? what is this for? inspection?

worse comes to worse i will have to souce a low k getrag to swap or even consider a t5 conversion

    cheers guys

A mate had his getrag from his S3 VS ute replaced as it was a bit whiney and got jammed in gear, like something was stuck internally.

Had a T5 fitted in its place

300 000 is a fair few kms, so i wouldnt be expecting it to live too long behing an L67

Check that the noise isn't caused by a part of the engine or gearbox touching the body....this will amplify noises normally dampened. Did you use new mounts for the changeover? Didn't remove any of the body rubber plugs under the carpet?

Brand new engine mounts and gearbox mount. The box has been removed 3 times know so I'd imagine it's not rubbing. The gearbox never used to whine in neutral but know it does. Also wondering if I can use a flywheel from a t5 and a heavy duty clutch to suit with the getrag. I no the flywheels bolt up the same on the crank

Is there any metal on the drain plug magnet (I assume they have one)?

Normally a noise in every gear except 4th is cluster bearings. The fact that it is noisy in neutral suggests an input shaft bearing noise.

If its not touching the body, it may be gearbox out and teardown time.

yes well it whines in every gear as the revs increase. has since i brought it at 240,000. know its alot worse since the l67. started getting alot worse right after i gave it abit of a hiding.

what would be a better way to go? get it reconditioned or look for a low k gearbox to replace?

cheers for the help so far boys

I would say its fingered, they whine pretty dame loud before they seize though.
My old 5sp was absolutely screaming coming home from sydney, and it still made it home on 1/4 of a cluster shaft bearing, sounded like a big end knock idling in neutral but never seized surprisingly.

Maybe look at a TKO 500 if you can afford it, a good old T5 will handle the abuse for a while, they are regarded as a stronger box then a Getrag but not bulletproof.

Well in neutral I mean rolling. If I'm sitting on the spot I can select any gear and can hear no noise at all. As I'm driving the whine starts to get louder as I accelerate

There is nothing moving in the gearbox when standing still in gear, engine running and clutch disengaged (clutch pedal on the floor).

May be worth checking that the noise is definitely coming from the gearbox.
