Default Does my Harmonic Balancer need replacing???

Had a bad noise on the VS V6 today got it home and loosen the belt to check pulleys first.
Found I can turn the outer casing on the harmonic balancer.

Q1. So does it need replacing?

Q2. The mechanic is not far away about 500m. So should I take the belt off and drive it down to him?

    Cheers Pete.

The harmonic balancer will spin with or without the belt as it's bolted onto the crankshaft.

And yeh if you can move the outer casing by hand you're up for a new balancer. Pretty easy job if your handy with tools, i'd change your CAS while it's off if it hasn't been replaced.

    Thanks for that.
I was just thinking if I take the belt off it will stop the noise and anymore damage.

    Hi Pete,

In answer to your original question, Driving it only 500m to the mechanic without the belt will be fine as long as you do it while the engine is cool to avoid potential overheating.

Where'd you get the HB from?
Still seems a bit steep in price, just informing you incase you wanted to go back for a refund tomorow and buy it from somewhere else before you put it on.

Its resonable if its including labour i suppose, but 330 for just the part is expensive. Should be around with 150 from Repco etc.

Yeah just drive with the belt. Even 500m I wouldn't risk without the waterpump. Plus no alternator etc etc. steering will be very heavy. Worse than a car without power steering

If its only gotta go 500m up the road, just drive it up there with no belt, it wont hurt anything, just be sure to drive it straight up there from dead cold, dont go starting it for any other reason until you are right to leave ,cause it wont take very long to get hot once its running with no water pump running, you will have probably 5 min or so running time max. I wouldnt run it any longer than that.

Drive it with the belt still on. the only part that will get damaged is the old harmonic balancer. It cant fall off, either. I did ~1200km driving around for a few weeks with a stuffed one on, it wont do any harm.

The risk of getting stuck in traffic/an accident/whatever and overheating is far worse than any risk of driving with the belt on.
