    Default just put in a new water pump(pictured) I have a Q

How long should I wait for the glue to dry

I understand it's common sense to wait for it to dry, but that doesn't mean it's going to fail if I don't wait?

i'm just impatient and ready do some skating in my driveway :P

Overnight would be ideal, but if you left it 2 hours it should be sweet. Most people wouldn't even wait that long. Sure looks like you put plenty on there !!

id say wait the outside is dry aka the bits where it over flowed. but generally if your using gasket goo you shouldnt tighten it up til its fully dry. so imo do it up til its finger tight and then once its cured then tighten it the rest of the way. other wise if you tighten it while its all wet it will just squeeze out and may also get inside to. thats just my oppinion. so dont quote me on it lol

true, maybe i shouldn't have put the gasket on with that amount of glue but serial i only plan on doing the job once, not a 2nd time so i made sure there's plenty

my radiator is stuffed anyway lol - will run it for a week, do a flush & replace the radiator

i will run it tomorrow morning for the first time , will do the waiting game to make sure its sealed :P, i did it up firm, i thought there is a chance there is glue will go inside, but i tried to minimize it, i mainly put extra around the sides, i didn't want to play with it too much because it was a hot day and for sure it would have dried before i got it on the car

i was going to let my mechanic do it, but they would have done the same job, except they wouldn't have waited 24hrs before its dry(i guess they have other customers to attend to)

    see how it goes tomorrow

the gasket itself should do all the sealing, the goo is just a backup in case the surfaces aren't perfectly flat (pitted, corroded etc) rarely have i waited before filling and starting and have never had a problem. i've even made thermostat housing gaskets out of wetbix packets and they never leaked

    /\/\/\ This

I dont use gasket goo or silicone on water pump doesnt need it i only use if anything a thin (and i mean thin) smear of Aviation sealant (aka loctite no.3) i also use that on the bolts that go through to water. Put everything fill it up and away i go.

good old no.3 brown sticky non hardening sealant, same stuff i use pub, but as i said only if the surfaces don't look 100%, nothing worse than trying to pry off a water pump that someone has drowned in silicon....

haha, it took me 20 minutes of using a scraper , and 5 minutes of using a wool drill piece to shave the rest off and make it flat, at least the next owner will spend a whole week on it after i finished with it

If your using a gasket as well the gasket goo is only for any pitting etc. you should use a tiny amount and you can tighten it straight away. If you used the acid cure stuff (smells like vinegar) it cures on contact.

What do you mean you didnt even tighten it?

Why would you start a car and run it without tightening the water pump?

no I tightened it firmly, I could have nipped it up a little more, it wasn't leaking for 10 minutes, than when it got at operating temp it cracked, theres a hair line crack inside the casing beside the pulley..

either they've got it back from another customer and sold the thing as a brand new after they thought they fixed it, or, it's because it is a cheap overseas crap...
