rito i am buying a 5ltr v8 vs stato soon and like alot of them NO SPARK frekin annoying i need to know can you replace the "hall effect censor" and if so where to get one in wa, or is it easier to replace the dizzy. where to get ignition module in wa and how is the best way to reset the timing after dizzy replacement IE: what deg before TDC and how do you replace it
thanks daniel
Before you start spending money, the first step would be to check and see if you have any ECU error codes that point you to whatever is wrong. It's expensive to replace items without any idea whether they are faulty. In my experience (others may think differently) the most likely problem areas in order are:
Coil - Relatively cheap but a bugger to replace. Bosch ones are available at most motor part stores.
Ignition module - relatively expensive but easy to replace - can buy used and rebuilt ones on eBay.
Hall Effect sensor - can be replaced - relatively cheap but needs distributor to come out.
Distributor - relatively expensive and a bugger to replace
i have spoken to the guy that owns it and there is no fault codes and like alot of posts on here it was surging and chugging along then stalled. hasn't started since as it has no spark he thinks hall effect censor or ignition module
If it was surging and chugging first, it sounds like the fuel pump.
it was on gas at the time and now it wont run on either as there is no spark
If it won't start at all, it is probably the ignition module, as they just die. In my experience the hall effect sensor will give you intermittant problems especially when hot.
If you get hold of a wiring diagram and a multimeter, you can check the voltage of the distributor sensor input at the ignition module. Should be around 4.5v as you crank it over. If it has voltage there, then check the output voltage of the ignition module, see if the ignition module is your problem.
If it is the hall effect sensor, then it is easier to replace the whole dizzy. They are less than $200 for a complete unit.
Hope that it is the ignition module, as it is an easy 5-10min job to change over. The dizzy is a real pain to swap over. Good luck.
PS: Base timing is 10 degrees BTDC. You will have to "pin out" your ECU diagnostic plug before setting the timing (paper clip to link plug 5 and 6 together). To make it easy, before you pull ou the dizzy, take of the rotor cap and mark the position of the rotor, when you re-install the new one, make sure it is as close as you can get to the original position, (and don't turn over the engine in-between times).
If u need a new distributor buy it off eBay they are exactly the same as the auto shop but a hell of alot more cheaper
