Thread: Tensioner pulley

    Question Tensioner pulley

I need to get a new one cos of the rattling that's been going on for months, and i saw this:

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/HOLDEN-COMMOD...QQcmdZViewItem

Does this seem to be an ok set?
There is a tensioner pulley in this right? I thought the tensioner pulley alone costs a fair bit more.

    Thanks!

The pulleys you viewed are for series 1 (not 2) and only include the pulleys and bearings. There is NO tensioner pulley in the ones depicted on Ebay. At $69 plus postage and no come-back I'd reckon you can do better from SuperCheap/Repco etc....plus you can take them back if any problem.

I sprayed mine down the back with crc, and put a socket and bar on it, and worked it a few times, and it fixed it, (i'll see for how long for soon), it's only a friction rattle, usually nothing wrong.

thanks hako and others, i will check out supercheap, etc, and see how i go, otherwise it's down to holden to pick up the part i guess.

any idea how much for the tensioner alone?

What makes you think you need the tensioner? - they usually are only needed if the housing shatters or wear causes the pulley to be out of alignment. Don't forget the bolt on the tensioner pulley is LEFTHANDED.....the other 2 are normal. I think the tensioner is around $139 but thats just a guess.

From what i've read on other threads on this topic, my problem seems pretty consistent with everyone elses related to the tensioner: loud ticking, clicking, rattling sound direct from that area.

Take your belt off and give the pulley a spin by hand. If it's cactus you'll hear it.

Dont take the belt off no need to ...if you want to see if the pully is stuffed get a screw driver and while the car is running put the screw driver on the suspect pulley (not the moving part ) and then put ur ear upto the screw driver and if you hear a bad grinding noise then i would bet it is your bearings

From your description it sounds like just the pulley bearing is stuffed...and if one is gone you can bet the others are on their way as well so probably best to replace all 3.

OK then, I checked it out with the screwdriver and the ticking seems to be coming from the pulley identified on the diagram below.
It doesn't sound to good through the screwdriver and it's definitely on the right hand side of the setup.

Which of these pulleys is actually the tensioner anyway???

Mine got noisy at 90,000 and I replaced all 3 for luck. If they are plastic they are the originals and if metal they are replacements.

So the one with the spanner is the tensioner pulley?

So would that mean the eBay set contains the tensioner too?

The one on Ebay does NOT have the tensioner - it has the pulley and bearing which goes on the tensioner. The tensioner is a separate part with a big spring inside. A pulley attaches to this tensioner - it is the spring in the tensioner applying pressure to the pulley that keeps tension on the belt. The three bearings (with pulleys) are generally under $70 for a set and only one bolt to undo for each pulley (beware the pulley on the tensioner has a left-hand thread). These are metal and have replaceable bearings (which are about $7 each) The original pulleys are plastic and you cannot replace the bearing.

Do it yourself and they cost about $70 or less for the 3 pulleys with bearings (not each).

sorry to invade your thread but Have a small problem hoping someone can help me out with. I have a Vr and just purchased a tension pully from the wreckers. Holden had told me it needed replacing but the wreckers gave me the whole bracket which seems when looking at it that you have to take off the Alternator. I thought you could just undo the bolt on the tension pulley itself and replace it that way.
    Thanks Sutto
