sticking gear box

i got a vs s3 v8 and the gearbox wont let me get change out of second and fourth. i have to pull the stick down and to the right to let it free... anyone had this problem before? i'm pretty sure it will have to be rebuilt so im goin down to see the mechanic tommorow but i just wanted to see if anyone has had this problem, how much it cost them and what the cause is too...

Ive had a simular problem where i couldnt change gears at all and the problem was that the clutch dropped.

Did the Series 3 V8'S have the Gerag five speed?
If so its the same as mine and all my gears change smoothly, maybe change the oil in it, or get the clutch looked at ?
