Hi all,
My VS Series I auto gearbox appears to take longer than it should to engage in reverse and drive. I know this usually means the gearbox is on its way out but just wondering if there may be any other solutions to this problem. When I bought the car the transmission was overfilled by about half a litre so I drained the excess out but it still does the same thing.

Also when travelling over 90km/h and you take your foot off the accelerator it seems to slow down faster than what it should (as if its in a lower gear). Possibly thinking the torque converter isnt locking up properly at 85km/h or whenever it cuts in. Fuel usage at 100km/h is about 10L/100km and it should be about 7.5L/100km.

When coasting with the foot off the accelerator at about 60km/h instantaneous fuel usage is about 6-7L/100km, and it should only be about 3L/100km (like my VP). All the wheels spin freely, tyre pressures are @ 32psi, and the brakes arent binding.

Any ideas anyone?

At 100kph in D you should have just under 2000rpm - otherwise it is not in 4th gear with the convertor locked. The owners manual warns that your may experience a delay when D or R is selected..... I think more than 2 seconds would ring alarm bells. If I were you, I'd drop the pan and do a filter and fluid change and check all linkages - wire and selector rod, to the box. Could be as simple as a blocked filter. Eliminate all the easy ones...then, if no improvement, consider whether to take it to a trans specialist and spend around $2000 or a wrecker for $500 or whatever. Beware of the fact that there are a lot of auto trans cowboys out there ready to pull the wool over your eyes.
