Hi All,

For as long as I have had my car, it has had a shudder on takeoff, in the past 60,000kms it has not got any worse from what I can tell, and I'm just wondering what the cause might be.

I can feel the shudder through the steering wheel a little bit, and also through the seat. It only ever happens when you take off from a standing start, sort of comes in at 2000rpms and then disappears soon after. It also occurs in 2nd gear occasionally under moderate to heavy acceleration at a low speed.

Any ideas on what this might be?

Cheers

Edit: I should mention that the car has the independant rear end setup. My parents VS also shudders, but its a different kind of shudder to mine, and theirs has the live rear end.

Do you have any idea of the price of either of these items?

Cheers

Ive tried alot of things...new tailshaft centre bearing all engine g/box mounts uni joints etc...i rekon its just a commodore thing cos i havnt been in a commodore pre 2002 that didnt do it...it would be great to find out what does it tho cos its pretty annoying to me

enigne mounts are very common, sounds like thats whats causeing the shuddr to me , not to cheap but i think about $50 each . not the easiest thing to instal either , if you get the done by a mechanic itll take 2-3 hours

i had this problem, so when i had my car serviced i had my throttle body cleaned out and it seemed to clear the problem right up...

The following cars I've had have shuddered exactly as you described:
1995 VS V6 S Pack Manual Ute - slight shudder
1997 VS V8 Statesman - slight shudder
1991 VP V6 Calais - quite noticable shudder
1996 VS V6 Calais - no shudder at all, not even slight

When I bought the VS Calais I should have asked the owner if he had anything done to it or if it ever had the shudder. I changed the centre bearing and uni joint in the tailshaft in the ute and it made it worse so I put the old gear back in. I suspect that its an out of balance tailshaft or gearbox mount problem.

Theres a lot to be said about a 1 piece tail shaft!
