i have a 97 vs ute, i've just noticed a noise when in nutural and the clutch out. it sounds like a grinding noise . any advice would be great

I'd reckon have a look at your thrust bearing and/or pilot bearing for the noise.. Either way the gearbox will have to be removed to replace these parts. If your gearbox has a dust/inspection cover that can be removed it will make identifying the cause of the noise easier, however I'd recommend you go to a specialist for some advice...

Thrust bearing makes noise when clutch pushed in. Doesn't rotate when clutch out. Pilot bearing (or bush) makes a noise when releasing clutch. Gearbox bearing (normally input shaft) makes a noise when in neutral and clutch out and go quiet when push clutch in. Also could be noises in various gears when driving todiagnose exact bearings.
