Hey everyone

Going to do my fuel pump and wanted to know what to use to clean all the crap out of the bottom of the fuel tank and how to go about it.

It's best if you do this when you are really low on petrol...

You'll need to depressurize the fuel lines first by starting the car letting it idle and removing the fuel pump relay while running...Then when the car stalls crank the starter for about 10 sec to relieve any pressure left.

Then disconnect the negative battery terminal...

Then you can undo the fuel lines and wires coming out of the pump...and disconnect the vapor hoses...

Then you need to syphon the remaining petrol out of the tank...

Then its just a matter of unbolting the tank... you will then need to remove the fuel pump... do a search there's a thread somewhere on how to do it...

Then rinse the tank out through the main filler neck with some petrol...swirling the petrol in the tank and tilting the tank letting the dirty reminants escape through the fuel pump hole into a steel bucket...

Dont use anything but petrol to clean your tank... if you use water you'll contaminate your fuel system and make your tank rust.

Hope that helps...

Is there a small filter on the pickup tube of the fuel pump? - if so that should be washed in petrol to clean. You can also put a rag on some thick wire and push it in the tank and move it about to dislodge sediment. Make sure the rag will not shred threads and will not fall off the wire. Be very careful.....no smokes, sparks or other ignition sources. Good Luck.
