I have a Toyota Lexcen, which as you would all know is basically a Commodore VR. It's a Auto too.

Over the last few months I've had it sometimes stall when the engine has been idiling low. For example, I stopped at a red light at few months ago and the car just completlely stopped. Engine went off, so i quickly put it into park and started it up again before the lights turned green. I didn't really think anything of it, but just now it hasn't been starting at all! the starter motor tries to kick the engine over but it just doesn't start!

I just had a service done on it at Midas and they gave me the a-ok.

Does anyone have any idea wat it could be?

Sorry...I know this isn't any help to your problem but you had a service by Midas.....the exhaust specialists???? Do they have qualified mechanics to service & maintain vehicles? Wouldn't you be better off going somewhere that speciallises in servicing & maintaning your vehicle properly where you can talk to a real mechanic & also tell them what problems that you have been experiencing with your car so they can find a remedy, i take it you asked Midas why your car was stalling at traffic lights!!!!!!!

I had my car serviced, and it seems i need a new crank angle sensor, the mechanics cant say for sure what the problem is unless they are there when the car stops, then they can diagnose it
My car did that again yesturday, racv guy said 90% chance its crank angle sensor, and if you have water in the car, just chuck it over where the sensor is to cool it down, then it should start again, otherwise wait a few minutes

I was quoted about $220 from 1 mechanic to replace the crank angle sensor. I rang up the wreckers, and they said $25 for a second hand one, and $83 for a new one, but once you open the packet of the new one, there is no warrenty!
To replace, you have to loosen the belt, take off the harmonic balancer, then replace the CAS?
Is 220 a rip off?

Well the guy at the wreckers, who I have delt with before and is very helpful, said he owns a VS, and he put a new one in, and it lasted 12 months, and then he put a second hand one in 3 years ago and it is still fine.

I just bought went and got a second hand one then, for $25 its worth a shot. I'll let ya know if it fixes the problem

i would put a new one as it is not worth the heart ache to struggle with the harmonic balancer when the second hand one might be as good as the one you replaced just think your one now becomes a second hand one

I just got told my crank angle sensor or dFI needs to be replaced - same problem, except my VS ute stalled at 80kmhr in traffic. Very dangerous!

Im pretty peeved because its not covered under my warranty, and I was quoted $350 for the crank angle sensor, or $450 for the DFI

what sort of tests have they done? its normally one or the other.. i think the CAS you can get the Harmonic Balancer taken off and see if any damage to the sensor, but you can also check your computer for errors
