I have a VSII Exec and the cab light only comes on when the doors are open and the engine isnt on...blah blah blah. My point is, it makes up its own mind.
Now this is OK, but I want a switch to turn it on and off whenever I feel, so Im wondering whether a light from a Statesman or Berlina, Acclaim would fit into my fixture. The Exec has all the wiring needed for a better light, but you must have had to pay extra for the switch...

they way the light works in my acclaim is that it turns on whenever i open a door(with ignition off) it then turns off about 20sec after you close the door or when doors are locked. light can be turned on at any time by pushing dimmer switch up (next to head light switch).
Unfortunately there is no way of setting it so that the light dosent come on when i open the door :b:

you can disconnect the switch at the door and that will stop it coming on permanantly unless you open one of the others

Are you guys talking about the switch that controls the dash brightness? Push it up the dash is bright and push it down the dash is dull?
That wouldnt be any good for controlling the cabin light.
Anybody know about how0 the statesman or caprice lights work?
*looking for any excuse not work, wanders outside to check Statesman light*
VSII Statesman main cabin light works exactly the same as the the Exec light. There is no independent switch to turn it on. But, there are 2 extra "map reading" lights (passenger and driver) that can be independently turned on and off. They're not particularly bright though, good enough to read a map and nothing more. DJ Majah, maybe that is the extra wiring you have seen. From memory, the Caprice has 2 more map lights for rear passengers.
Regards,
Mark.
The sliding button next to my headlights dial not only dims/ brightens my dash but when slid all the way down turns the cabin light on.
OK then thanks guys, I'll give that a go. I cant say I like the idea of changing my dash when I turn the light on or off, but Im just a whinger.
All the wiring needed goes to the light, theres just no switch. Its bullstupid.

There's one solution I can think of... Work out the wiring that's in the main loom, and set up a switch like the ones in ex-cop cars. They're black-out switches, and they normally switch the entire internal lighting system off (glove box, boot, cabin).
I have an ex-cop 1997 VSII Exec, the switch is next to the immobiliser light under the radio/cd player. It's part of the wiring loom that splits and goes down to the power windows/auto-selector light/glove box.
It's supposed to help ensure no lights come on when you open the door or boot etc. Good for late nights when you don't want to disturb passengers.
Maybe this will help you, I dunno!
Best of luck.
