Try this

Mate, You need to look under the rear of the car at the diff.
IRS ( independant rear suspension) is exactly that. each rear wheel has its own external drive shaft ( axle ) . Where as a non IRS car the diff and axle are all located in one large tube assy. ( diff housing)
If you still cant tell, chock the vehicle then jack up the rear of the car and when the wheels are off the ground, turn one rear wheel and see if you can actually see the shaft running that wheel if it is turning or not. If you see it turning it is IRS. Do not get confused with the larger shaft that goes from the gearbox to the diff as this could turn anyway, just look at the axle running to the wheel.
Good luck with your suspension mods.;)
P.S. Dont ever forget if you are working under a vehicle that is jacked of the ground , make sure that you have some form of safety stand , spare tyre etc underneath it as well incase it slips off the jack.
Only takes 1 minute to do....... but could just save you from a nasty accident. :hit:
Catchya!

ey mate, ive got the exact same type car, and no they dont have IRS only the upper models had them, another way to check is, put it into D, one foot on the brake and other one on the accellerator, if the cars back moves down, then it has IRS, if it feels like its tryin to move foward, its a solid end.
But as i said, ive got a '96 S2 VS Exec, and it doesnt have IRS, so im pretty sure yours wont.

have a look under your head unit, if it has IRS it will say exactly that, otherwise it'll say RTS Radial Tuned Suspension.

It wasn't standard on exec's... but it was a pretty common option..

Apparently the springs on IRS get narrower towards the wheel... that would be another way to look at it.

Here we go - pics of IRS setup... live axel springs are the same diamater the whole way up. http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/showthread.php?t=4875
