    Default Head gasket

    Hey guys
Was driving my VS 1995 exec. the other day and suddenly i got a bit of white smoke pissing out the back. Had a closer look under the hood and found water in cylinder 4. I am not an expert but i pretty sure its my head gasket or a cracked head? I mananged to temp fix it with some chemiweld but its running pretty rough. Anybody had any simiular experiences? and if soo how much u recken its going to cost to fix it???
    Cheers

Not a mechanic and never had to pay for it to be done.

Labour - allow a day 8 hours could be more could be less. Take your own guess for how much per hour your mechanics charge, different mechanics different rates.

    * Gasket kit allow 150 to 200 to be safe. (I dont think they are that much, but again I have not done one of these)
    * Crack testing of head probably another 150 to 200 - I did my sisters skyline at the start of the year, and I think the price was around that, though I can not remember for sure - sorry.

Then if the head is gone you will have 2 choices, new from holden OR second hand - but you will of course want to have it crack tested as well. DOnt know what you would pay in this scenario but I would get both options priced up. If the new one is only a little dearer I would go that way myself.

Best bet would be to pull up to your mechanic and ask him to give you a rough quote, hopefully it is a straight forward head gasket, most mechanics seem to give a "best case" quote. I usually ask for a worse case price as well.

    Cheers,

    Stewart

ok when i was told by the RAC that i had a cracked head in my VN, second hand quote was between $700 and $900, but then a new one was any thing up to $1200 whick was the highest quote, best to get it checked properly as mine was only a split pipe.
Thats all right, thats ok, I drive a commodore anyway!!!!

You also need to put other thing together like what else needs to be fixed on the engine like for me same problem needed new heads plus I needed a new rear engine seal plus new water pump etc etc it all added up with labour so I ended up with a reco engine now $3,000.00 all up and my car runs like it's new again. In my case the car was worth it the whole car looks brand new still.
