Hey all,
Had some dramas today with my '93 VR V6 which I'm hoping someone can help with. To start from the beginning, since early in the year I have been getting an odd rattling which I can feel through the footwell. I call it odd because it only seems to happen when I'm at part throttle, typically when cruising up a light hill, but most often for a short period just at the top of a hill when I release the throttle.

I thought it might be some loose exhaust component which was just hitting a harmonic at a certain load condition. So I went under the car and sure enough found a loose flange after the extractors... but alas that didn't fix the problem.

When I had my car serviced at ultratune I mentioned it but they couldn't find anything and agreed that it might be something to do with my exhaust, e.g. damaged CAT honeycomb or something.

Anyway the problem didn't really change until today, I was driving down to Byron and all was going well until I hit the start of the 110km/h zone just beside Yatala, suddenly engine revs went up, engine light came on and power was reduced... obviously I was in limp mode.

I pulled over, turned off the engine, waited a bit and started it... no luck, it ran but still in limp mode. I pulled into the nearest servo and checked the obvious, all the fluids etc, nothing out of the ordinary, engine temp seemed fine. I thought it might be ECU problem so I reset it (disconnected the battery for 15 min). Upon restart the engine light was off, but came on again within seconds. So I read the engine error codes to see what was going on, getting a Code 66 "3-2 Shift Control Solenoid Circuit Fault" and Code 67 "TCC ON-OFF Solenoid Control Circuit". Checked the fuses, they all seemed fine.

So since it didn't seem to be slipping, overheating or loosing fluid I decided to drive (slowly) home by the back roads. It wouldn't pull top gear and was very sluggish when starting (up to about 30km/h) but the engine itself seems to be running fine. The rattling is still happening too.

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong and how to fix it? Is it a dead solenoid, can I replace myself or am I best to take it to an autotransmission specialist? And if so can anyone recommend one in Brisbane?

Unfortunately I'm supposed to be out of the country from this Wednesday for a couple of months... so I might have to get a family member to take it to be fixed.

Thanks in advance for any advice!
Aidan

Mr VR Calais, have you interogated the ECU to find out what fault codes it is registering?

Hey sorry to drag up an old thread, but I thought I should close this one out. I got by bro to take the car into Apex in Milton. Turns out it was just a loose connection in the box... $200 incl a transmission fluid change (I think). Better than the thousands I was expecting. If I had been in the country at the time I would have asked Apex to explain exactly what connection caused the problem so that we would all be enlightened - but didn't get the chance sorry.
