    Angry grinding noise....:(

hey, iv posted this befor but i never realy got a definate answer. i was wonder why this grinding noise occured while i drive. it happens only between 65-85km/h and only happens sometimes (often lots at a time and then not for a while). when this happens you also loose all acceleration, you have o remove your foot from the accelerator then put it back on to stop it. It had like this when i bought the car and the previous owner said a mechanic had told him it was a carbon build up (cant remeber what part of the car it was in). he said all that needed to be done is to get it cleened out and that it would cost about $200. apart from making a realy iritating noise i have also noticed that my fuel use is REALY BAD. im gettin bout 100km per tank less than should. i am wondering iv anyone could tell me if i have a carbon problem (and if so what does it cost to clean out) or if not any suggestions to what is wrong with my car.
sorry bout the essay length thread...
    cheers, jesse.

Maybe a bit more info like where is the grinding noise coming from - front, rear.
The carbon bit may refer to the catalytic convertor being blocked with carbon or the IAC valve or something else on the intake side....but neither of these would cause a grinding noise but they could cause loss of power but not intermittent.
Don't worry about the length of your post - the more clues you put in the better someone can solve the problem.

Maybe you both need to run a fault code check...see the "how to's" section.

I'm betting its the water pump thats shat a bearing...take your serpentine belt off and see it there's any side to side movement of the water pump pully... that could be making the grinding noises if it was knackered.

Could also be a jockey pulley bearing or the tensioner bearing for the serpentine belt and if airconditioning fitted the bearing for the pulley in freewheel mode or if it occurs while the air cond is running the compressor bearing/s. Also check the alternator bearings. All of the above with the eception of the air cond compressor bearings can be checked by releasing the tension on the serpentine belt with a socket bar (if the belt is taken off note which was the engine side and put back the same way (use a texta and put an arrow on the belt). Take the opportunity to examine the belt in case it has stress cracks on the inner side which may make a noise as it rounds a pulley.

Unfortunately when they break you lose engine cooling, electrics, air and power steering. If then you dont stop the car you will cook the motor in about 1 minute. Sometimes its a long way to walk home!

    >.< mines getting chronic for the vibrations [ which doesnt help, i drive around a lot of 80km/h zones, grind city till i click it back to 3rd ]

$2200 for a reco unit mother ouch, may as well see if a wrecker would let you gut one out but then you wouldnt get a warranty with it. teh pain.

I'm no friend of wreckers but most will give a warranty especially if they instal it - though to be safe take you grandfather with you to witness the warranty statement (it goes better at the small claims tribunal ----- just joking).

    Default Grinding noise

My commodore as same noise for 6 months comes and go's .
I beleive it is a problem with hub or bearings, lost of people are say motor ect,
but my car being a manual and put clutch in and the noise continues...
I have tried slamming on the breaks sharp turning and other things just to see if it has any effect on the noise. But nothing it just starts and stops when it pleases..
I have done easy 15-20,000 kms with out anything breaking so I would not lose any sleep over it.
    Good luck
    JH

$2200 are you serious? you can pick up a MINT trans and converted for $300 and install it yourself.
Mines also doing it at around 80kays, its obviously a common problem.
