manual style shift kit

I am after a shift kit to make my auto VR fully manualised, so when you put in D it will be in 4th gear.
What is the best option and can it be done by myself?
Currently my auto is playing up, after a bit of driving i will lose first gear, so when i drop it back to first it wont go back but it will usually find first gear when in D.
If i drive it for ages punishing the old auto then when left in D and i pull up at a stop sign or slow down and give it to it it wont drop back any lower than 3rd or 4th gear, i then have to use the selector to go to 2nd and it wont go back to 1st.
I am hoping after fully manualising it will fix the problem or is my problem deeper than that maybe in the clutches?

i think a shift kit will compound the problems you already have - I'd try to get it fixed first (they might install the kit for you as well at the same time)

how much does it usually cost though? i've seen the kits on ebay selling for a bit over 100 bucks.

i wouldnt do it. A mate of mine with a tough vn street car, rebuilt a t700 with full manual. It was a waste of money. Never worked properly after that.

he replaced it with a full manual 400.
