Hi everyone, i've just bought some seat covers off of a member on here (wanted7) and i need to remove the headrest to get em on. Now i've read another few posts on it, some mentioning some sort of 'clip' or something that needs to be released... i've tried picking around in there with a small screwdriver but can't find any 'clip' as such.
I also read in a post that the older model commodores had an easier release mechanism and that with the relatively newer models (VS etc) the 'clip' was placed in some plastic thing AND THEN had the seat material placed over the top making it extra hard to get to. I don't really want to have to do what the other post suggested: strip back the seat material right up to the headrest to find this infamous 'clip' and undo it, so si there anyone else who's removed a headrest in a VS before that can shed some light on this problem?
Thanks alot everyone, cheers, Bryce.
come on... surely someone out there has to know or has had the same problem.
I couldnt find the clip as well, pretty dodgy! lol
sure is, i'd go chainsaw massacre style on it but i want my headrests back on once the seat covers are on. Anyone else have any ideas! please! if anyone has seen how dodgy half a pair of front seat covers on looks you'll feel for me here at the moment :P.
All I can suggest is to try sticking a safety pin down alongside the headrest rod on the side with the notches to see it you can push back the catches while you or someone else pulls upward on the headrest.

ah ok cool. i'll give that a go later on. anyone else have any other ideas at all? anyone have a picture of the elusive 'clip'?
Maybe a feeler guage blade down the rod? ....
Look at:
front seat head rests
Hey hako mate, thanks for the reply. What exactly is a feeler gauge blade? And yeah... i've read that post, i've been through all the posts on headrests and still haven't found anything that's shed much light on it. Surely there has to be a way to get them off without taking off the damn seat covering material.Originally Posted by hako

A feeler guage is a strip of spring steel about 100mm by 16mm (4" X 1/2"). They come in varying thicknesses and come in a set of maybe 10 or 20...cost but a few dollars. Used for setting ignition points or valve clearances etc.
How about about of hacksaw blade with the teeth ground off.
hhhmmm is anyone able to describe what this clip is like? i can sort of see the white plastic bit, is the clip actually on the inside of this plastic itself or what? i tried sticking a safety pin down inside the plastic bit but i couldn't even fit that between the plastic ring and the head rest legs, so not looking hopeful on fitting a hacksaw blade down there. Cheers.
Geez, glad its a piece of piss to get VR headrests off.
yeah ya lucky bugger. anyone else managed to get these damn VS headrests out?
Maybe someone needs to find a burnt out VS or a seat frame without the fabric to find out how they are retained in the seat.
yeah, if only that someone could come help out here about now that'd be brilliant. Cheers everyone for your help so far anyway though. Ideas people... ideas...???
ok, i'm now offering my appreciation and a virtual pat on the back to anyone who can shed some light on this :P i.e. - *bump*

dude, your a damn legend. I'll give that a go tomorrow and see how i go. Might need a little help with some of the terminologies there, but i'll see how i go anyway.Originally Posted by VT_Acclm
Oh yeah *hands over virtual pat on the back* well done.
From the thumbnails courtesy VT_Acclm, the headrest posts still look like they should just pull straight up....When mine is fully up I count 4 detents as per the thumbnail and hidden under the trim is a tapered section of the rod??....maybe the clip goes thru a hole in the post. Bit of a bugger having to pull the seats apart.
hhhmmm i had another look today but still can't see much at all down in there because the seat covering is hindering the view. Don't really want to have to go to the extent of taking off the seat covering, it may be a case of giving my seat covers the chop and just letting them slip right over the headrest and on, then maybe a couple of stitches or velcro to hold it together. HHmmm tis dissapointing.
By the way, VT_Acclm, do you have any pics of the so called "hog" somethign or others that guide refers to? Cheers, Bryce.
A 'hog' ring or clip is just a semi-circular piece of wire about 12mm in diameter and used to clip 2 pieces of fabric together or clip fabric to wire or whatever. They are made of mild steel and bend easily. Name comes from the similarity to the ring that goes thru a male pigs (hog) nose which you put a lead on.
gee i only hope the headrest in my vx
are easy to remove if i need too

thanks mate i appreciate it. if i get the time i may just strip back the seat covering and have a closer look at it all. Don't really want to, but i spose i could save some other people some time and effort if i could get a few photos up of it all. Cheers.
Ok, I has reigned triumphant. It did how ever involve getting the seat fabric up first. So i've gotten my drivers front seat cover on.
When i do the passenger one i plan on taking photos as i go along and do a write up if anybody else is interested. Even though i had to get the original seat covering up it isn't a job that will take all that long once you know what your doing! (which is where the write up might save some of you some time).
Anyone interested let me know, cheers, Bryce.
