hi all

I've been searching around for a while trying to find a wiring diagram for the VR/VS diagnostic cable that is a USB connector.
As my laptop doesnt have a serial port and i dont really want to buy a serial converter.

any help would be great,
cheers
scott

I doubt you'll be able to find the wirring diagram for the usb cable but grab yourself a vr manual and it will list the pin layout for your car. Then, once you've esentially have produced a serial (RS232) cable, you can then go on to find a wirring diagram for the serial to usb cable. I was going to make on up myself (as my laptop on has usb too) but found it easier to make a serial cable and then to go onto buy a serial-usb cable.

Do a search, we have covered this before. Michaelw is the resident expert with these things. 2_SeeK_U what circuit did you use?

Michaelw sells them here:
http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/showthread.php?t=13311&highlight=usb

He made a page on making one up here:
http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/showthread.php?t=19665

Heres one circuit available:

http://www.techedge.com.au/vehicle/aldl8192/8192hw.htm

I have made it up, but used the wrong caps, and it didnt work. I have been meaning to swap them but havent got around to it yet. As michaelw's site says, watch the serial->usb converter you use. Some wont work.

Thats the same one as l bought, but l'd recomend this one as its from an australian dealer:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-USB-TO-S...737470053QQcategoryZ31495QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
or
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/USB-to-RS232...5842831511QQcategoryZ3704QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

BTW, l run windows XP and judging the fact that your laptop doesn't come with a serial connection it either must come with windows 2000 and up or is a small form vairant (i.e. thinkpad), so you shouldn't have a problem with the drivers.

EDIT: kopper69, you hit the nail on the head. I orignally found that techedge site awhile ago and that was what inspired me to make my own.
