did your original have a trip computer?
Personally im not sure whatcould be wrong but it might be something to do with the differences between your original and the new dash.
Hi, I have just bought an HSV dash cluster, trip computer and wiring harness which cost a me a f****** mint. Its all setup but the speedo and revs arnt working anyone know why? Cheers Ben
did your original have a trip computer?
Personally im not sure whatcould be wrong but it might be something to do with the differences between your original and the new dash.
attn Über geeks, i play Second life. Patrio Graysmark.
you could have blown the cluster when installing it. happend in my commo and it was gonna cost me over 400 dollars for a new one. lucky for connections had a mate workin at cranny holden
It just had the speed alert and normal level 2 dash, everything else works but the speedo.
does the rpm gauge work and wen its night and u turn the lights on doez the cluster light up???
Speedo and RPM do not work but the lights, Fuel, Temp and trip computer all work fine.
na i dunno then thats diff to what happend to mine take it to holdne and they can tell ya they got all those gizmos and shit
The speedo and tacho should work with the standard wiring. The additional wiring is just needed to get the trip computer up and running.
I have heard of clusters which have been stored sitting on the green circuit board at the back of the cluster, which has rubbed and damaged the wiring. I would look at that first.
If it is damaged, you should be able to take the one of your previous cluster and use it.
Another potential issue is that VN/VP and VR/VS clusters are not interchangeable withour major re-wiring. If the wrong model cluster is used, then the green circuit board burns out. If your check of the circuit board indicates electrical burning, then you might have the wrong model cluster.
Let us know how you go.
Could it be because I have a V8 cluster and my engine is a 6?
Its all 1996 VS Commodore like mine except the loom is from a statesman and the cluster from an HSV GTS and the trip computer module is new from rare spares or something. No damage at all to anything.
ohh yeah hang on i remember readin about that somewhere it actually could be coz ur car is a v6 and its from a v8 u gotta take it to holden and they will re programme it for ya, have fun drivin with no spedo ur lucky u have illumintation, i had nothin in my vy for like 2 days
Thanks heaps dude, do you know how much it costs, also will they reset my speedo to my original kms i dont really want it showning 178,000 when mine has just done 120,000.
check ya 3 main plugs if u have removed them u may have put them in up side down? coz ya dash instrument tation works off the 3 plugs n the trip works off the white pluf in the bottom
Hi,
Further to my previous, a V8 tacho can be adjusted to a V6 by making a few adjustments to resistors. If you want, I can try to get the info together on that.
The V8/V6 thing has no bearing on the speedo through. If the green circuit board is serviceable, then there must be something wrong with the speedo.
The 250 KPH speedo is the expensive item from a HSV cluster, so best bet might be the get an instrument specialist to look at it. An instrument specialist should also be able to reset to kilometres as well - this figure resides in the trip computer.
Fault finding might be assisted by borrowing another V6 L3 cluster, and seeing if the speedo/tacho work correctly.
This "problem" cannot be rectified by "programming" as in later model clusters.
I have 3 clusters, Normal L2 220km, HSV GTS L3 250km and a statesman L3 220km. none of them work when using the trip computer loom, when i use the original (none trip) loom it works only with the Normal L2 not the other 2. now when i start the car the revs go to 1000rpm then goes back to 0rpm even when i put my foot down it doesnt work.
Noted your last comments.
I have done this mod to my 1997 VSII, though with a V6 220 KPH cluster. I have had no troubles with it. Works a treat.
I put a V8 cluster in out of curiousity. The tacho did not work, but everything else including the speedo did.
The fault finding for the tacho is probably obvious. Is the Statesman one for a V8 or V6? If a V6, then your problem with the tacho is external to the instrument - noting that both have the same problem. That would mean wiring or green circuit board. If the Statesman one is also V8, then it may just need the resistor modding, or replacement with a V6 tacho.
IMHO, the issue with the speedo is either a wiring problem or something wrong with the speedo itself. That the Statesman speedo also does not work would seem to point to a wiring problem, but then the L2 speedo should not work either. Would seem to be a problem with both speedos or both green circuit boards. That would be bad luck.
I just found out that the wiring loom is from a VR commodore not a VS like i said before.
VR/VS looms and clusters are interchangable I believe. That won't be a problem.
How much of the new loom are you using?
It should just be the fourth connector and a trip computer buttons.
Please confirm that you are using the same connectors for the L2 and L3 clusters except for the L2 not having the fourth connector underneath.
in the VR Trip computer loom they all fit except the Rear demister button which is a complete diffrent shape and there is a heap of spare wiring at the end which as no use, might be for air bags but im not sure. and yes im using all the same connectors.
I've used up all my ideas.
Tacho probably just requires a V6 tacho or modification of the resistors.
Both L3 speedos would appear to be not functioning. Surprising, but if the L2speedo works, that only leaves the green circuit board and speedo.
thanks for your help mate.
I just went for a drive with the HSV GTS cluster and the kms never went up, its still stuck on 178,000km, i must of drove 10km and nothing.
Tacho is working exactly the same as when I did the same thing...it doesnt worry the gauge doing it it just does that..... temp gauge will have to be changed too as they are different v8 to v6.Compare the terminals written at the back of the cluster on the green pc board between the l2 and the trip computer to see if any are different.
Check that you have put the blue surrounded instrument plug in the dash pad the right way up with pink/black wire on the top left black on top right no wire in bottom left and blue wire on the bottom right as you look at it installed in the dash. This plug has a wire responsible for the speedo input ... the violet /white wire

yea the green pc board is diffrent between the two but the same between the hsv and statesman except CON3 which is seatbelt and press remote. what do i have to do to make the L3 work in mine.
Right, now my speedo is working fine but the Revs and Temp arnt working at all, also the fuel usage isnt working (est fuel used) Any ideas?
