my v6 auto vr box is slipping, ive organised a 2nd hand gbox with only 90 000km on it, just wondering is it worth shift kit it wile its out? whats an average price on shift kits and are they really worth it?, i dont have lots of money, im buying the gearbox this week, and have to wait a few weeks to get it fitted coz of no moneys, note: the car is off road so im really wonting car on road soon as possible, but if i shift kit is worth it i can wait a bit longer![]()
fit it urself.. its fairly easy.. just gonna need some muscle... shift kit on a box that isnt in good workin order will just kill it quicker.. have u seen if the 2nd had box is in good workin order.. shift kit will b about 500 installed
There is always the argument of whether the shift kit will kill a box, or make it last longer. Its split when you talk to gearbox builders half say you need a rebuilt box to get a shift kit, the other half say you put a shift kit in a standard box and it will make it last longer.
If you think about how a shift kit works it slams the car ino the next gear with no slip between the gear like a standard box, which should in theory make the clutches last longer as they are not being slipped.
Trust me you will love a shift kit, I have a stage 2 in my VR it will chirp the 1st gear change at half throttle, and chirp the 2nd at full throttle. Best mod I have done in my car.
Just make sure if you install a shift kit in your 2nd hand box to also fit an aftermarket transmission cooler. The biggest one you can find the better.
With the money issue The shift kit should cost around $350 to $400 fitted. Trans cooler another $150 fitted. So around $500 all up.
If you are going to have the car for a few more years do it. Just say you keep your car for another year and this shift kit cost you $500 to install. Divide the $500 with 365 days of shift kit enjoyment. Which is less than a $1.50 a day. Its a bargain. Thats how I look at it when i start thinking about mods.
Eg My rebuilt motor with cam, and port & polished heads cost me $2200. which is $2.00 a day over 3 years I have had it.![]()

I agree, it is one of the best mods you can do. I have a V6 VT and I believe it is one of the best things I have had done. My Son has a V6 VR and we did the same to it. We could have it a bit more savage in the change on the VR because it runs a LSD.
If you have an LSD in your car make sure you tell the transmission guy. If you don't have a LSD let him know that as well. If he is any good at what he does and is fair dinkim he will tell you that he won't go too savage on the change. If you insist on going too savage with the single spinner you will end up tearing the rear end out of it.
That price of $350 to $400 is spot on the money. In that price he should also do a service on it for you.
Good luck and I know you will enjoy it.![]()
Sorry matey, if you were in Sydney, it wouldn't be a problem. Down in Melbourne, can't help you, sorry.
Personally, you will be better off if you can find some one that really knows what their talking about when it comes to shift kits. Knowing just how far to go without doing damage; for example what I said about being a single spinner or LSD.
Good luck.![]()
