hey fella's,

ive just started towing behind my vs. its not much weight (jetski) but my cars seems to over heat way more than normal. i know vs's fan dont kick in till 3/4. my mine usally sits around 1/4 driving and if sitting at light for a while it will go up to 3/4 and the fan kicks in. when i tow it sits over 1/2 all the time. is this normal??

my fan works the same as yours. The weather is getting warmer though and if your worried about it just turn on the air conditioning, it should turn on the fan. I dont tow though.

Yeah sounds about normal, 1/2 is nothing to be worried about. If it was sitting constantly at 3/4 or more whilst driving, then it might be an issue. Sitting at the lights with it going up to 3/4 or a bit less is normal, mine does the same. Just make sure you are running the recommended GMH coolant, and at the correct rate, 50% concentrate and 50% water. If you decide to change the coolant, change the thermostat at the same time.

I would be more concerned about overheating the auto, especially on series I VS, they didn't have the external cooler in front of the radiator, if you are looking at doing a bit of towing over summer, put one in, cheap insurance in my book.

Yeah series two VS have the external cooler, its a small rectangle shaped radiator just behind your rego plate. Series one VS do have a trans cooler, but it is part of the main radiator tanks, and is no where near as effective as an external mounted unit.

If your car is fitted with a genuine GMH towing pack, especially the 1600 and 2100kg versions, then you should already have one of the external coolers... but if you are going to be doing any sort of towing over summer, I would highly recommend getting the auto fluid changed or flushed if need be, and making sure that the coolant is up to scratch too.

i thought mine was running hot too, but seems like its normal. One less thing i have to worry about now
