as some of you know my car has had more problems then its worth.. once i get one thing fixed another problem occurs sometimes more then one.
the thing is i only recently paid 3grand to get it painted and dont know if i should keep it or not..
The problem it has now, the gearbox is playing up, when i come to a stop (when drops back to first, it sounds like somehting spins, like its in neautral then stops and the car nearly dies (some times has stalled) when i put my foot down im pretty sure it slips, also most of the times when im at an intersection or a stop and go to take off theres quiet a delay, the car revs but goes no were then all of a sudden it takes off again. the oil has changed to a brownish colour ever since this has been happening, was red about 2 wks ago.
ive got a 2nd hand gearbox here which has only done 90 000km, but its going to cost 310 bux to service it and swap gearbox's over which doesnt bother me too much but there are a few other issues with the car and i dont know if its worth swapping gbox's over.
I recently put some ported, polish and shaved heads on (simply to fix the leaky valve stem seals on my standard heads, and within a day after putting them on and putting it all back together, the rocker arm pivot bolts came loose, so i went down and got some loctite, took all the bolts off again and cleaned the oil off them applied loctite let sit for a day, then started her up and went good until recently (this was months down the track) it starting making loud ticking noises, so i pulled the rocker cover off and there was a loose bolt. so i undid them (driver side head) cleaned them applied loctite, afair amount of it, put it all back together, let sit over nite, started up in morning, got to work fine, comming home started the ticking noise again (same noise as before) i havent bothered undoing the rocker covers yet as i was tired when i got home and sick of doin shit to the car.
im goin to try and buy some new bolts and try with new bolts and loctite, the loctite i use is in a little red bottle i think its loctite 243 or something by memory, is there a better brand/type to use?
i know it doesnt seem much, but i gaurantee you, once these 2 problems are fixed ill have more problems knowing the history. the only things in this car that hasnt had probs/replaced are pretty much the tailshaft, diff, coil packs.
What should i do? keep and and fix these 2 probs, or save me money and buy another car
ps. not having a car is killing me!!
Sorry to hear, well it depends on your financal situation, if your well off then get rid of it. But if your going to buy another similar model, keep your one, as you have spent cash and its probably better then the one you might get.
if the car always breaksdown get rid of it, you will end up paying more than what another car cost. As for the thinking of once something fixed another problem comes along... that is so true thats why if some breaks but doesnt effect the safety just leave it
If i was in your position and could afford another car i would get rid of it
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people
use cyberbond 7262 studlock - formula was written by the same guy who did loctite, but stronger and cheaper.
or failing that, just keep the car with it's problems, save up or get finance for another car, and hock off your car to some idiot

Trade in your old car in, peace of mind. But it probally worth over 2 - 3 grand trade in. If I was in your postion, depends on my finance, get rid of it, get a better car and dont forget RAC Vehicle check inspection. Or one owner or, old people they are very gentle with those good cars. Young kids like us always screws the car up dont we?? hahaGood luck mate all the best.
hmm thanks guys, but be4 i can trade in i still gota fix it lol, ah well gives me sumin to do
Well mate, it has months between problems. And you are learning when you are working on the car. If you have just had the paint done recently I would get it fixed up and look after it. Loctite comes in a huge assortment. Its not cheap, but it comes in all different strengths - low/med/high but servicable/so high that you could never remove them. You should find one that suits your need. The gregorys manual should specify the compounds recommended for the different parts of the car.
Dont get down on yourself. Everyone does the same thing, you have a problem that you just cant seem to fix, and its a real problem cause you rely on the car. The best solution you think is always to sell and get something, which will ofcourse never have a problem. But you will need to fix your car first, but when it is running, you will love it again.
yea so true.. im actually tending to lean towards keeping it and fixing it atm.. but keep the thoughts comingits come so far it'll be a waste to get rid of it even if its cost a lot to get there and nothing special.. and ive done most of the stuff and have learn a far bit like kopper69 has said
if ur broke keep it cuz eventually u will run out of things 2 go wrong and if u buy a new car, u might have 2 go thru the same sh*t all over again..

if i turn my diff around, will it make my car front wheel drive??![]()
I'd keep the car mate. Even though it's given you a few problems, deep down you love it...come on, admit it. Put it this way - everything you've fixed is now fixed and won't give you shit for a while. If you buy another, you may be opening another can of worms.
As for the loctite, I use 609. I will guarantee that those setscrews will not come undone after you apply 609.
ive decided to keep the bugger, the rockers are back on, just waiting for this 2nd hand vr motor (stuffed crank) which im taking a few bolt on shit off and putting onto mine, the coil pack is goin on, throttle body, and the rocker covers (as i have a whole in one of my rocker covers) at least now if anything goes rong top end etc ive got the motor sitting here to strip and put into mine.
now all i gotta worry about hopefully is the gearbox...
Good to hear your keeping it, keep it or get something decent (like new or near new). I found out my tranny is gone, $1800 for a recon. My other car the VZ (leaseback) had heaps of problems aswell (lucky not mine!), Toyota's are tough, my dad sold his 92' 2.0ltr Camry recently with 310k, no engine problem or trans, even the guy at the auto tranny place said he doesnt see much Toyota's with tranny problems.
ok rockers are done, coil pack done, throttle body done (eventualy getting the 65mm v8 one) and rocker covers done, ive also used the injectors and fuel rail with the fuel pressure regulator (needed a new regulator)..
took her for a drive once i got everything all back together and ill tell ya she starts first go, idle is soo smooth, no ticking from rockers, now i need to get some moneys up to get my gearbox swapped over and i think its all done :O
