Body Control Module

hey guys,

i have a car alarm fitted to my car and the past year or so it hasn't been working so today i decided to have a look at it to make sure that it wasn't a fuse. look under the drivers dash where the fuses are i removed the heater-a/c duct to the door and noticed there was a thing called a BODY CONTROL MODULE. i never knew anything bout this and dont know what its pupose is. can anyone help me in what this actual thing does.

it controls a lot of the body electics & the factory immobiliser.
central locking, windows, wipers etc depending on what model
