I've changed that many brake pads in commodores its not funny, so i'm not clueless on this subject.
I recently put bendix heavy duty brake pads in the back of my car (same brake pads i've always used in the front, previously metal kings). They were fine for a few days and now they squeak like you wouldn't believe. Any idea why? or what i can do to stop it?
Its just plain embarrassing to drive it at the moment.
The squealing is caused by vibration of the pad against the caliper. Make sure all the dust is cleaned off, usually spray the brakes with a hose, all the anti rattle clips are in place and the slides are greased and moving freely. You can also use a product called Brake Stop its red and it's like silicone, you apply a thin smear to the back of the pad where it contacts the caliper and the piston, wait for it to go off and then assemble the brakes. Also make sure there is a tiny bit of grease on the edge of the pad where it slides on the caliper.
did you put them in yourself? if you did, did you bed them in properly before driving the car "normally"?
thats usually what causes brakes to squeal.
yeah i bedded them in, even though they say that you don't have to any more.
Yeah i greased the slides and everything is in the right spot.
I've never used the Brake stop product as i have never needed to in the past. but i'll give it ago.
the thing that gets me is that they didn't squeal for a week and then both sides start squeal as i came of the highway the other morning (just a regular stop, not hard) and have continued since.
say they were not bedded in right how can i fix that? sand paper, rough them up a bit and go again? or what?
Damn never thought i'ld be embarrassed driving a hsv
You will need to go through the procedure again. The best way to bed in brakes is to get up to 80kmh and brake hard down to about 10kmh, do this 10 times, you will get a pretty bad brake smell but this is normal. After the 10th time drive around for about 10 minutes to cool the brakes. This process also burnishes the pads if you didnt machine or replace the rotors.
Not_An_Abba_Fan is correct with that procedure - it is outlined in an excellent article on brakes at:

There's more on brakes there than you ever need to know!
yeah thank for all the info. I pulled them all apart last night, cleaned them all of with brake cleaner, used the brake stop, left the anti rattle plates of this time around (one was slightly out of shape), then re-bedded them in the way i have in the past, 60-10 12 times (i hadn't read these posts until now). And they didn't squeak on the way to work. So i'll give it a week and see how they go.
Hopefully this thread also helps out other people.
I always use the pads the local holden dealer uses for out of warranty vehichles. You can somwhat garuntee you will get a non squeeling pad then, they dont want customers comin back about squeelin pads all the time. Generally the ones i get there are "acdelco's" and are a good non squeeling pad.
the best anti squeal product is done by Wurth i use it all the time as i am a mechanic i even do away with the anti sqeal plates sometimes depending on what state they are in!!
Leave lazy 11's everywhere you go!!!
I found that on my VS,the cheap brand brake pads squeal like crazy.I fitted a cheap $30 set of front pads one day to get me through to payday,as I didnt want to score the disc, (new disks all round). The pad was worn down and she was just starting to make a noise. So I grabbed this cheap set of pads from supercheap, and Ive never heard anything like it.The squealing noise was just terrible.I replaced them a few days later with a set of performance bendix brand pads(I think that was the brand), price was around $70 for a front set, anyway,I have not heard a noise from them since.Stay away from cheap pads. They can be the cause of very bad brake squeal.
No matter what compound pad you use they shouldn't squeal if you use a bit of high temp grease.
On the leading edge of the pads backing plate (where it meets the caliper bracket), place a small dab of copper based high temp grease such as copper eze or Wurth CU800. Be careful not to get any on the friction material.
If the pads have been used for a while you may see a shiny surface on this leading edge where the squeal (really a high frequency vibration) has polished the metal.
A smear of CRC anti squeal (looks like orange silicon sealant) on the back of the pad where it touches the caliper body is also a good idea.

checkout the QFM brake pads here on the forums in the gslrallysport sponsor section, ive used them for a while, best braking, no fade under heavy breaking, no sequel and no dust!! and there half the price of some of these expensive pads. Alot of taxi's use them as well so musn't be to bad. I think there australian made to.
Interesting to hear these comments on QFM pads.
My experience has been the opposite.
I fitted a set (front and rear) to a falcon and it felt like the master cylinder had let go. (yes they were bedded in) Clamped all the hoses and the pedal came up firm and high.
Fitted another brand and instantly the pedal feel was restored.
I was talking to a mate today and he just removed a set from his VT braked VS as he found it wouldn't stop well and made heaps of dust??
Go figure??

that's strange, what brand discs were you using? ive always used dba discs.
Falcon had factory dics
Vs has RDA or DBA slotted, cant remember which.
Mind you, I have VT calipers and m/cyl on mine (same as my mates but no slotted rotors) and we are always trying different pads and not much seems to work, even Bendix. Best so far have been GM police spec but lots of dust. I think we cant get enough line pressure with a VS single diaphram booster and the larger bore master.

hmm ok, im just on stock everything with dba discs and the HP-X pads in my VS Berlina, also using stock setup on my dads' pulsar with dba's and HP-X with no problems as well. Im using DOT4 fluid.
Must be the lower line pressure combined with the larger pad area causinga reduction in force on the pads???
Mine do get a lot better once they have some heat in them.
Apologies to the OP for off topic :\
