Arrow strong joilt when put into drive from park or reverse

my car experiences a strong joilt (like somebody hit your car from the back) when it is put into drive. For about a second when i accelarate it does not move but when the car does stort moving it starts with a violent joilt. I have seen other commodores come out of driveways, put into D and drive off smoothly but mine does not. Does anybody know what is wrong with it.

Cool

i only accelarate when the position is in drive but i often see my neighbours car coming out of their driveway with their commodores and they go forward without stopping from going in reverse with no violent joilt. His car takes off smoothly. (my naughbour has a vp and vs commodore) What i should of mentioned is that the problem is worse when the car is not warmed up.

well this is what i know. when you put it in drive it takes maybe a couple seconds or so to change into gear. if you accelerate before this it will jolt badly. if this doesnt apply to you, do a codes check. maybe a solenoi needs to be replaced or mite just need a good service

The owners handbook says to wait till the gear engages after selecting "D" before accellerating. This takes about 0.5 sec on a reco or new transmission or up to 3 sec when the bands are worn. Mine was at the 2.5 sec stage just before it failed.

before your transmition had failed was it running poorly as mine is running quite well however does have a 0-2 second jolt. Does this mean my transmittion is on its way out.

You should get it serviced, at least.

it sounds like there is a fault in the trans, probably a shift solenoid, when these faults are active the trans goes to maximum line pressure & will not take off in first gear.
is the engine light on?

Rob

Actually mine was running A1 before the sun gear disintegrated. The delay in gear selection from neutral or park is usually caused by wear in the bands - you select "D", the solenoid opens/closes valves to allow the servo to tighten the bands on 1st gear, they're worn, the servo is sluggish and it has a long way to travel, you push the accelerator down before the bands have actually tightened and BANG...it all comes together.
At least thats the way my repairer explained it to me.
End of story is that you can fix it sooner or later. Sooner means you pay less, later....well.
