Hello
I changed the rack on my VS a few weeks ago
The connection between the Steering wheel and the Rack is going to be a bugger to get back on, took me 30mins just doing that,
yeh the tie end rods, I simply used a spanner and levered them out of there
didnt do any harm
Im Sorry Officer, The little green fairy told me to do it
that helps so i know im doing the right thing um but how to u UNDO The connection between the Steering wheel and the Rack cheers
There are 2 bolts that go through a coupling just above the rack. Undo the bottom bolt, take it right out and the rack will slide out. It is on a spline and the shaft has a flat spot that lines up with the bolt. Also when undoing the tie rod ends, take out the split pins, undo the nuts about 3 or 4 turns and hit the edge of the steering arm with a hammer. The pin of the tie rod end is tapered so it locks in there. When the tie rod end is loose, undo the nut all the way and it will drop out. Undo the lock nut that holds it onto the rack and spin the tie rod end off counting the turns as you do. Reinstall the tie rod ends on the new rack the same number of turns. You will still need a wheel alignment but it gets it pretty close.
