Hey everyone,
I got my first car not to long ago, a 93 VR Commodore. It's manual but we have been having some problems with the clutch. My brother thinks it is hard to use and feels weird when you push it in, he drives an 88 Ford Maverick and says that is a lot easier. My dad who drives trucks for a living finds that it is weird as well, we gave my uncle a call (He's a mechanic) and he said it could be the clutch cable.
So we ordered another one, took the other out and put the new one back in. The old one was pretty rough and it was hard to pull the cable out, then all of a sudden it would let go and come out easy. We put the new one in and adjusted it but it feels like it is doing the same thing. There's a fair bit of play (We have adjusted it and everything using the Gregory's guide) and when you push it in it will be kind of hard to push in, but then about 2/3rds back it will go real easy.
Have others gotten or have this problem with their Commodore and have any suggestions to fixing this.
Cheers in advance,
Brock
Come one, anyone? Please.![]()
disconnect the clutch cable and try pushing it in then that will test if you have a tight spot in the pedal box. apart from that the clutch fork and all the other moving parts are inside the bellhousing
Ok so I can just take the bottom of the console off again, detach it from the pedal and try it?
And the pedal should be smooth and light then?
yes but still "springy".
My factory vr manual had a clutch that was similar....heavy and it seemed to take up right at the end of its travel. Also it gave a few wierd noises from cold and it was nearly impossible to adjust the travel.
Travel problem turned out to be a broken return spring on the pedal so Ifixed it but had to modify it so I could install it without hurting myself and still work the same but have less tension on it but still work without breaking again.
Clutch was nearing its end so I replaced the whole unit pressure plate, clutch plate and throwout. That changed the feel of the clutch and it lightnened up considerably and didnt put too much strain on your left leg.The other noise turned out to be a spigot bearing .....spinning in the back of the crank which I replaced also.
If you look at the throwout fork inside the bellhousing it looks wierd with a piece of square steel that acts as a sort of balancer.....I have heard of this throwout fork bending and breaking before.
This is my vr that I rebuilt ....CLICK HERE to see my vr on Cardomain

Cheers Mark, really helpful, we might have to do that.![]()
Ok well I disconnected the clutch cable and moved the peddle back and forth and it was smooth and light so the problem isn't there. All it can be now is the clutch it self.![]()
