Am not mechanically minded at all. Have just had car at mechanic which resulted in much work being done - initial problem was coolant leaking and overheating. When the car idles the temp goes up to about half way. Mechanic says this is normal...but is it?? Car is a VS Executive S2 1996.
Was told that had a blown cylinder head gasket or cylinder head damage. Any advice much appreciated.

G'Day Nomes,

Any other symptoms?
Oil or Bubbles in the Water?
When you take the radiator cap off.
Is there any Mayonese under the Oil Cap;
where you would top up the Motor oil.

Is the Oil Creamy when you check the Oil level?

What else?????????????:bang:

Have not noticed any other symptoms. Oil does not seem to be creamy, no oil or bubbles in the water, no mayo under the oil cap.
Mechanic has said that he fixed the cylinder heads and associated parts along with the necessary gaskets and seals, water pump, thermostat, and gasket. Am still concerned with the temp going to half way. The fan is kicking in when it hits half way.

Overflow was up to min mark after went for short drive this arvo. Radiator full. Doesn't seem to be any leaks. Can't understand why mechanic would say it is normal????

If it's going up to halfway after idling for a while that is perfectly normal, even if it goes a bit above halfway that is also perfectly normal, and as long as the thermo fan kicks in at that level, there is nothing wrong with the system at all.

Make sure you are running the correct mix of 50% coolant concentrate, and 50% water in the cooling system, not that premixed crap you can buy in the 5lt containers... as thats only 33% or less.

yup, completely normal for a VS to do that, the temp can go up and down between 1/4 and 1/2 quite alot depending on conditions. it can take a little while to get used to i spose - most cars, especially newer ones the temp guage wont budge at all....different story with older commies.
id only start to get worried if the guage gets above 3/4 mate, then there is something wrong.
