im doing a cooling system service 2day and ive come to the part where i need to install the new thermostat.

which way does the thermostat sit in its housing? is it with the spring inside or outside the housing?

Now excuse me 'cause I'm an old bloke, but to me the thermostat housing is the bit that is removed from the engine block to replace the thermostat. It 'houses' the thermostat....acts as a cover. That being so, the spring side of the thermostat with the wax pellet that senses coolant temperature must be on the other side - the engine side - not the housing side. Otherwise the thermostat will not be able to do what its supposed to do. Usually the plain side (no spring or pellet) is marked "radiator".
