Question Any Ideas People? Rattle driving me nuts...

Well, changed my timing chain today in hope of fixing the death rattle I had. No luck, new chain, tensioner and new water pump. Also changed the H.B not long ago.

Any ideas people! Im going bald from this!

Can you describe the rattle to make it easier to diagnose where the rattle is coming from.

I can hear a ticking noise when my car is running from a fair distance away with the bonnet shut. In my car i believe that it is the belt tensioner. So it might be worth checking that out.

If it is the lifters is it hard to replace them, I need to stop this rattle!

If its the lifters just try a thicker oil next time you do an oil change. Does it seem to happen when the cars been running for a while? Or when its still a bit cold?

When my car was at the mechanics last time he commented that my tensioner needed replacing and showed me that when reving at about 2000 revs, you can see the tensioner bouncing up and down slightly in tune with the tapping noise. I still havent got round to replacing it though.

Put your finger on the tensioner while the car is running, not the spinning bits though, cos it would probably hurt. You will feel it if it is making the noise.

Yeah dude check the balance shaft i went through the same process u did i eventually just took it out and replaced the timing gear with double row. idle wasnt that bad and noise was gone. i hated that noise makes everyone look at ya lol but its a very common thing on those motors

i had a craphouse rattling noise comin from under the bonnet too. was particularly bad when pulled up at the lights (ie. in gear idling). replaced the serpentine belt and that quitened it down most of the noise. my old was pretty perished, might be worth checkin yours.

been told idler pulley can make a fair a bit of noise if worn as well

lifters are pretty common, so are injectors. to replace lifters remove heads and manifold, pull out out pushrods, unbolt retainers and lifters come out. my alternator ticks aswell

Two possibilities, the harmonic balancer or the belt tensioner.
