currently doing up a vs v6, and was wondering if i could get some feedback on whether i should mini spool, or just go all out and get the LSD?
depends, how you drive, how experienced are you, have you driven a spooled car, is it your daily,
a spool is 4 people who cant afford a tight lsd.(my opinion). the have been countless threads on the pros and cons of both lsd and spools. atleast lsds a legal and suit the daily driver. spools are for rally cars or drag cars
i got a spool in my daily. no probs at all best descision i ever made and im sure stealthy and a few others would agree.. is this car manual u thinking about putting a spool into?

Spools are for race track use only IMHO!
Go LSD... more control, Safer, And unlike Minispool.. they are legal
what makes them so dif from a spool auto and a spooled manual ?
u can control the gears. say u plant it get sideways after 5500rpm or what ever it wil change to second get traction and can send u flying into a curb or somthing.

get a tight lsd dood, my mate has a spool in his stato, he got like 4000ks out of his tyres with very minimal burnouts, nasty to drive, shudders like hell, not good for a daily driver man
aigght sum1 wanna explain to me wat a
mini spool is?
a locked diff?
and a
a detroit locker?
Lets see, $120 for a spool, or over $2000 for an LSD that will just wear out in 2 months.....
My turning circle hasn't increased at all. The only difference i have now is i can do a uturn on a 20c peice if i choose to.
Not once have i had my diff cover taken off during an RBT. My car even went over the pits twice with a spool.
Auto or manual it doesn't matter. I have the knowledge of both (converted to manual after i got the spool) and suprisingly, it was good with the auto. I could hold the car at a certain revs and it would sit the same angle sideways for as long as i wanted.
That because you don't know how to control a car. Anyone who has ever driven with a spool, knows how the car will react. Specifically, a road i take every day for work. Its a wide sweeping bend, and speed limited to 80. Accelerating through there, while raining, and the car doesn't get sideways. I'm sure if you dropped to 2nd it would, but no-one would do that on a straight road, let alone a bend.
IMO, they are for a person who wants them.
This has to be the stupidest post in the thread. An LSD has parts that wear out, meaning one day (maybe not tomorrow, but soon enough) your brand new LSD WILL open wheel. A spool NEVER wears out. Speeding is illegal, but i bet everyone here has done it at one stage.
More control with a manual, because you choose when the car changes gears, not the car.
Great point. You just proved how unreliable open wheelers can be (which is what your LSD will end up as)
Sorry to ay, but your mate with the stato has some serious Rubber problems. I would think all of his bushes are worn out if its shuddering like hell.
I can drive my car as smooth as anything, not a single shudder. The closest thing to a shudder would be the skipping when turning, but any skilled drive can control that aswell.
On the tyres thing, a Spool NEVER wears out tyres. End of story. With a spool people do more burnouts, which means less tyres. thats a choice tho. Choose not to, and your back tyres will last as long as your fronts.
I should probably explain where this post has come from. I've daily drive a spooled car for 4 years. My car never steps out sideways, unless i make it
I've also had cars with open wheelers, stock LSDs, and welded diffs. A spool is the most predicatble of the lot (welded diffs can snap easily, due to the heating of parts). A spool is 100% predictable. You will know what it will do every time you stomp on the gas pedal. LSD lovers will claim black and blue that they are more predictable, but they are not. They have parts that wear out, that is fact.
You could look into getting a Lokka. It is a similar setup to an LSD, but used a ratchet system to lock under load. For me thats still not a big enough guarantee of how the diff will react, so i chose against it. But personally i rely on my car to do what i want, when i tell it to. with anything less than 100%, i wouldn't drive on Adelaide roads.
A mini spool is a cylinder looking device that locks the axles together. You can get stronger ones called Full spools that bolt to your crown wheel, and have less parts than the diff would with a mimi.
A locked diff is different, but people refer to minispools and welded diffs as lockers (i do to, even tho its not correct, but thats what most people know them as)
A proper locker is that of the Detroit Locker. I don't know the inner workings of them, but i assume they are a similar setup to the Lokka (which is mostly used in 4WD vehicles)

Price difference between what?
A minispool supplied is about $120. Maybe cheaper on ebay.
Add 200 or so if you want a diff shop to fit it.
A rebuilt LSD would be about 1000, and would be fine for a few weeks/months depending how hard you drive.
My mate bought a KAAZ for $2000 fitted.
Detroit lockers are.....alot dearer.
