Fuel Economy/rough Running

Hi all,

Just thought i'd let you all know of a problem i had with my VSII Berlina when i bought it second hand almost 2 years ago. Perhaps some of you may have the same problem.

When i bought the car, it stalled about 2 nights later. I rang the dealer and they took it back to have a look at it. From memory they couldn't find anything wrong. I found that it only stalled when trying to reverse (ie when parking). It did this every few months.

At idle it would be fairly rough and every now and again it would really kick (misfire?). When trying to take off from the lights the revs would just die (almost to the point of stalling). This was with or without A/C.

Fuel economy was unbelievable - it was worse than my parents VN V8 calais (which does more city driving). This was what really p###ed me off! I kept telling the dealer every time and they kept saying it was normal. The best figure i could manage for normal driving was 13.4l/100km. On a trip interstate i managed to get it down to 11, but in general it was in the high 13's. This was costing me a fortune in petrol. I tried premium and this made no difference. I tried using power mode instead and this didn't make it any worse. I tried gunning it from the lights, but this also made very little difference. The A/C made no difference.

Every week when i cleaned the car, the back of it had turned almost black from something. When accelerating there would be smoke out the back. Of course all of this was 'normal' according to the holden dealer.

Finally on recommendation of a friend i took it to his mechanic and within 1hr the problem was solved. The fault - wiring to one of the oxygen sensors was wrong/dodgy. I'd imagine this would have been the case from new (and possibly why the car was sold). The smoke was actually unburnt petrol which would coat the back of the car. The stalling was probably caused by one o2 sensor saying to cut the petrol when it shouldn't have.

It took almost a year to fix this problem, but since this the car hasn't stalled, the idling has been smooth, the acceleration excellent, the economy brilliant! (i'm now running in the 10's). Needless to say i stopped going back to the dealer. I've also discovered that the matt black exhaust pipe is actually a nice stainless 2 1/2' tip.

Not sure if i'm alone on this one, but maybe someone out there is experiencing something similar and could find this useful.

Cheers,
Brett

here's something a lot of people don't realise: dealers are often not the experts. electronic diagnosis is a specialised art, and the best guys can sometimes be the specialist independent operator.

Hell yeh glad to hear its all fixed up.
Did you get a engine warning light at all??

Holden dealers really don't care once they have sold you the car.

Nope, no check engine light. I measured the voltages on both o2 sensors and noticed one was a bit different from the other. The mechanic said that basically one was soooo close to being out of spec (ie causing a warning) that Holden should have known better.

I ended up replacing both o2 sensors before finding out they weren't at fault - $200 down the drain. Then again running for nearly 100000km on excess fuel may have killed them anyway.

I never did get a reply to my letter saying why i wasn't taking it back to the dealer anymore...

hay Brett. typical holden dealer - with this problem you had when your sitting idle (at lights say) does your car have like a miss in the engine. we just put a recon engine in our vr and it still has a miss in it and no-one seems to now what it is. just wondered if you expirienced this in your problems??

Yep, it wasn't all the time but sometimes it was pretty bad.

I'd suggest taking it to a place with a dyno and equipment to read the computer while the car is running. I took mine to an ultra tune recommended by a friend. I'm not sure if they used the dyno or just the diagnostic equipment, but the problem was solved for just over $100.

Is yours heaps heavy on fuel? that may be another indication of this problem.

Which Ultratune?

Hi Brett,

Which Ultratune did you end up going to to get this fixed?

I suspect I have a similar problem with my VS Series II, and want to take it somewhere reliable - and that knows what they are doing.

cheers

Hey John,

I took it to the one in the Adelaide CBD (Waymouth St).

I have a 62 Lt tank (95VS) I normally get 350/400km to the tank. I got it down to about 10lt/100km, got 533km out of a full tank, how good's that! Pure highway cycle though.

I do around 300km a week highway cycle (down to uni and back), and another 100-150 a week for work (teh pizza boi) and normal driving around. It costs a fortune.
