    Unhappy Chewing up fanbelts

    Hi all

I have a SII V6 with about 110k on the clock. I've had a work car for the last 2 years (S pack or SV6), but I've recently changed jobs so I'm back in my ride. It hasn't seen much work in those years. Shortly after I got the car the crankshaft pulley got a small stone lodged in one of the 'v' and destroyed the belt. The RACV put a new one on, but in the last two weeks I've destroyed 2 belts! The belt isn't running true on the idler pulley, and is slipping off the front of the pulley.

Any ideas? Has a bearing collapsed, or something in the tensioner? The Kmart type manual is no help.

    Thanks

    Rick

    Check everyone of your pullies.
I had my idler pulley (excuse the spelling) perish on me.
It literally exploded. But i think you'd notice if that happened.
But anyway, check all your others. Make sure they spin freely.
You might have a seized bearing on one of them.
Also check out your harmonic balancer. hmy:
That could've gone, but again, you'd notice something like that.
Let us know how you go.

Took the belt off tonight. All pulleys are free and dont seem to have any tight spots. Harmonic balancer seems ok. Have a look at the attached pic. It seems that when the idler pulley is under load, it twists down at the front pushing the belt against the side of the steel pulleys. How is the thing held in ????? It's like the locating pin has broken (if it has one).

Sounds like your tensioner has crapped out on ya.
Not just the pulley on it, the whole arm. :b:
It has a big spring inside it. Thats probly wots gone.
I'd say either go to a wreckers or get a new one.
They're not 2 hard to replace.
Not sure how much it'll set ya back though.
If you need help in how to get it off or nething let us no,
    I got a gregories.

Had it checked by the local dealer. Reckons the spring in the arm has gon, but everything else is ok for the age. $150 new, $44 second hand. S/h looks the go. Any tricks to putting it in? Cant get hold of a VS manual ("we can order it in but it will take about 10 days")

Well, the new arms in. Couple of hours, no dramas. Should have flushed the coolant as you dump a lot taking off 2 o-ringed water pipes. Everthing looks ok.
