I have a VS series 2 V6 auto wagon.
The mods i have done are CAI, Extractors, Cat back system, K and N filter and had a DR Bob tune.
My question is how much peformance should I have gained. Is it noticable against stock if I was to race another.
The only reason why i am asking is the other night i raced a mates VS wagon that only has CAI, and cat back system and when we raced from standing start to 100kmh it was level the whole way.
I would have thought with me having tune and extractors i should have pulled away.
If i should have then what maybe wrong. I checked the ECU for any fault codes and its clear. My wagon and mates wagon had done about the same km's. About the only other difference is my auto is starting to show its ages.
What do you all think maybe going on?????
it comes down to whos engine is in better condition.... and also those mods wont give u pulling away power from pretty much the same car u need real mods to do thats sort of thing
and with the auto if its starting to show its age that would be the culprit as it would be slipping and not putting the power to the ground as good as it could...

Carrying any more weight than your mate?
Yeah VLDavo is right, those mods wont give you the pulling away power you were looking for.
Bugger. I woul dhave htought having few more KW's would have made noticeable differeance anaginst stock. It only worried me becuase we stayed level the whole time and i thought to myself why did i waste this money if its done nothing.
Think it has settle it though. Its time for more mods. If i cant beat a stock commodre then somehting needs to be done. Dont really want mega horsepower just want to be bit quicker than the average commodore.
So i think Diff gears and rockers and auto rebuild are coming.
Thanks guys for putting me down gentle. lol
Were you driving in (d) drive? from my experiences with mates etc if you wack it in a lower gear at takeoff it has a better acceleration rate thats what me thinks n e ways
Yeah had car locked in each gear with power button. I did get good launch and got in front but after that it was dead even.
Why have the power button on? Remember too that a 1kW is 1000W. If you work with anything electrical you will know that thats a fair bit of power. You cant just add a little bit of a plastic intake and expect an engine to produce 1000W more power unless something was wrong to begin with. The CAI in a stock 6 really only benefits your car when you are sitting there and you are moving slowly amongst traffic. When your moving, the stock intake will take in just as much air at the same temp because the air is moving up the side of the radiator and straight into the intake. Hot air doesnt sit there because fresh air is moving in too fast. K&N filter - well I have always believed the only advantage is the longer life. K&N will market that they have better air flow, but I have seen plenty of tests that put K&N performing the same or worse in terms of air flow than a paper filter.
Logicly though if you have a slightly modified car against stock then the modified should win. Im not syaing my wagon is some fire breathing dragon. But it shoudl have picke dup around about 15% more kw's over stock. So if you do the maths thats about 169kw which puts it up there with the 5lt VS in performance.
I have in the past (not with my car) seen how a 5lt goes against a V6 and they slightly pull away.
Working on that theory then yes i should have slightly pulled away from the stock wagon.
As fo rthe power button, The tune DR Bob has done for me differs depending on the power button.
And for the record i do know about power. I have been a sparky for the past 15 years. Thanks for the lesson though.
things like cold air and exhaust mods on a v6 arent all that flash, if your car was heavy that night and the other was lighter or somthing then your mods would prob not make much difference. 15% from those mods would be nice but its never going to happen, i think it pacemaker or one of them that claim a 10% increase in power but its been proven they do very little for overall power gains. your best bet will be the rockers mate.
no longer a hoon by association - the commodore is gone
I might be wrong but I doubt that you would have an increase in power of 15%. Im very interested in the difference that the tune made though, because im looking at getting one in the near future, depending on how much cash I have left over after paying for all of my Uni stuff![]()
mayb ur tune isnt done properly either it could have affected the performance might take a couple of tries 2 get the tune correct when i chuckd mine in i noticed a fair difference i no its no v8 but i can pull away from another v6 by a car lengths pretty easily and ive got pretty much same mods in my vr.
CAI, Extractors, highflow Cat back system, K&N filter bellmouth out and sv3800 tune my tranny does slip a bit here and there but she still goes try racing later at night on a really cool night u will suck in more cold air then during day and u will get better performance![]()

So does everyone else though.
TheDon - 15% - no way. You have most likely taken the figures that manufacturers have claimed and added them together. The problem being that manufacturers will work hard to make sure they get good numbers by creating the right conditions to favour their product, whether it fits in with a real world situation or not. 169kW is assuming too that a 10 year old engine with probably excess of 200k kms still produces the same amount of power as it did the day it was made. You are right logically though, I would have put my money on your car.
Your car should have definately won. Even though your mods would not give you heaps more kw it should give you enough extra power to beat your mates car. This brings me to my second point, just because your and your mates car are the same model with the same amount of kms doesn't mean they would have the same power. Every car's engine is different depending on how it was treated and driven in the past. I have driven many cars that were the same model with the same kilometres and all stock but drove completely different to each other. Some where very smooth, some were rough, some, some handled like a shoping trolley, some were powerful, some were gutless however all were in top mechanical condition.
For example some ecotec engines last last just over 100,000kms while others last over 500,000kms.
