is it possible to do a straight swap of master cylinders without changing the booster as well, ie a 1" MC inplace of a 15/16" MC
the V8 models had a 1" master from memory so it should be a straight swap

I remember reading something about the VR-VS never having a 1" master cylinder at all. They were all 15/16". The only exception I think was the VS series 3 Statesman.
That is only for all VS's the Vr's are the same as VN-VP.
The Vs no matter what engine Holden or HSV has a plastic booster with a 7/8" fast fill brake master cylinder similar but smaller than the 1" master fitted to VT onwards.
The VR still used the metal booster in single V6 and double V8 diaphram and will accept 1" masters.
I believe you must get a specific ABS master if car is fitted with ABS.

Well, there you go. Couldn't remember exactly.
no ABS, the 1" MC i grabbed from a VP wreck. just wanted to make sure that i could do a straight swap, without needing to change the booster as well, coz i don't like my chances of finding the donor VP
Totally normal a lot of people will think the same , after all there were heaps of suspension changes with the new VR but the brakes didn't change until the ecotec came with the VS.
Only the VS has that brake setup.
A bit like 5 litre VT parts only made for 1 model.
