hey everyone lost my keys last night in a taxi
they havnt been handed in so is there any way i can get another key for my VR without spending a million dollars... thanks im guessing all locks, ignition barrel and BCM have to be changed?
your holden dealer or mobile locksmith can make new keys for you and its cheaper than changing all the locks. the remote is $95 the key I'm not sure! the catch is they need the car so mobile locksmith is probably the go, cos you will have to tow it to the dealer thats more money!
Nobody wants to play with me
i had this done not long ago, it cost me about $300 for 2 new keys. Its not that cheap but considering the mobile locksmith had to pull apart the boot lock and align the tumblers, cut the new keys and program them etc etc etc i wasnt too fussed
yeah what classified said, pull out a lock an easy one. and get the lock smith to cut a new key, and yeah it is costly.
or ring the taxi company, they should have a list of where there taxi's have been, i reckon giving them time and area should be enough to find out which taxi it was
cash.. no receipt. i know the taxi number but they said theres nothing they can do about it and ill have to call up police stations and ask for the lost and found.... locksmith is coming in about half hour... what a waste of cash
i left my phone in a taxi on australia day and was too blind to remember what taxi company i used, i just called all the major companies and told them where and what time i caught the cab etc, they gave the phone back the next day. so try calling around and im sure ull find them cos its not something that someone is going to be able to use for themselves
no longer a hoon by association - the commodore is gone
go to a deale rwith the VIN number & proof of ownership, they will look up the key code & security pin to get a key cut & programmed, any decent locksmith can do this for about $120
YOU don`t have a spare... WTF...This guy is dead right give them your VIN (plate in the windscreen on the passenger`s side and they will already have that key pattern on file and send it to head GM and will get it in say 3days (sorry, will have no car) then the dealer/ you can open the door with the metal bit of the key and then that will give you/them access to the programming modual uner the steering wheel then they can program the key to the immobiliser and remote entry sensor and bob`s your uncle ( I have a uncle robert to LOL)
TOTAL COST $120-$150
no need to wait 3 days, its all online now & can be looked up in under a minute (depending on connection speed)
most locksmiths have a tool that will allow them to program a key using the BCM pin number, all you need to do then is follow the instructions to finalise the key programming
i did what whiteknight said essentialy, tho i never lost my keys, the button on the key was stuffed and the engine imobiliser would play tricks at the worst times. took it to the holden dealer in town and they got all the codes confirmed from original key, got new codes from Holden aussie, put them into my car and boom,, flying againset me back $180NZ and that was with discount as had crap load of other work done at the same time.
how did this go anyway, i was told VR keys could not be programmed to the BCM.
VR was the only model which u would need a new key and BCM togther, thats what i was told anyway.
And also most locksmiths wont cut you a key from the boot lock as it doesnt have all 10? pins inside. they wouldnt even cut me one from my ignotion barrel, they only wanted a holden code.
VR through to VX wrecking in WA, must get rid of these!

My Holden doesn't leak, It's just marking it's territory!
Hi guys..just a quick sidenote on keys. I use an original Holden remote key which had a flat battery and therefore the central locking doesnt work even though the key still operates as a key to lock and unlock the car and to start the engine. Now whether it disables the anti-theft correctly with a flat battery could have been some of my starting problems I thought. The plastic body of the key is broken away where one of the screws goes in to hold the key in the body securely..the other screw luckily is ok in the plastic body and that screw actually attaches to the little round contact of the key that hits the barrel ring on the car's ignition. I replaced the battery (which is a slide in fit inside the remote plastic case) thinking it might help my re-starting problem if anti-theft wasnt disabling properly, but that didnt help anyway.
Now here I come to the point...My ex-wife had to purchase a copy replacement key from Holden's themselves (I think she said about $200 Plus) a few years ago. Naturally over time the battery in that key died too. I opened the case up with great difficulty (even after removing the 2 screws) because the darn case was more or less molded together. I got it open only to find that the battery ITSELF was spot welded to the two contacts (positive and negative) and they in turn were soldered onto the circuit board inside the case. In other words you CANNOT replace the battery and its a $200 Plus throwaway key. I was NOT impressed especially coming from a Holden dealer. So beware when purchasing a key (overpriced and ripped off from Holden's) that you maybe ask to see inside it and make sure its not a soldered/welded battery and has a slip in surround to hold the battery so it can be replaced. Just thought i'd let you know in case somebody else has to replace a key or needs a spare. Maybe I was a one-off case in point..who knows. It would be interesting to hear if anybody else has heard of being ripped off that way too.
Sorry Hotblooded_VR, old news.....I think everyone on here knows that.
Sorry Not_An_Abba_Fan...I wish I had known that a few years ago...it could have saved me $200...thanks for telling me it was a known issue on the forum..cheers.
You can replace the battery!
Rip the battery off the contacts (the spot welding is weaker than the soldering for some reason).
I've ripped one out and replaced it, cost was $4 for the 3v cell battery from the local locksmith.
After you take it out - just solder it back in, so it sits in snug

Did you lose the memory from the key head? I think once the battery has been removed it needs to be recoded again.
