there are more threads on mini spools than iv had hot meals mate. Try using the search button but under the area where you type on the word "mini spool" there is a box, click that box and change it from 'search entire thread' to 'search titles only' this will narrow it down.

Full spool is an entire new diff housing, very tuff, illegal on the street

mini spool uses your current diff housing but a 'spool' will lock your current gears, illegal on the street

A mini spool/full spool will 'lock' your diff. basicaly both wheels are turning at the exact same speed, it will result in a chirping noise when taking tight corners

BUT, do a search mate there is ****loads of threads
no longer a hoon by association - the commodore is gone

Has anyone here opened up an IRS diff before? Ive only ever played with live axle diffs. Putting a mini-spool into mine. Whats involved in getting the centre out?

You could always buy the detroit locker centre.... the type with the gears that click over each other when you go round corners to still allow the speed difference in the two wheel. But still locks solid when hard drive is put through it. NOt sure who actually sells them or the actual name of them but yeah its a semi good option, easier to live with than mini spool....at least when it rains it is.

Everything has been done to death on spools.

First of all, the rain myth is bull****. Its your foot that decided if the car gets 'loose' in the wet.

Your talking about a Lokka, whilst a great design, the ratcheting noise would cause more unwanted attention than a spool. I can drive to work with a cop behind me, and he wouldn't know i had a spool. If a cop here heard that ratcheting sound, he'd just defect you, and your left with the costs of proving that its legal.

Im with Stealthy(after driving mates cars with LSD and spooled),and you dont need both the rears locked to have trouble with traction,my berlina is a single spinner and i have to roll through/around round-a-bouts otherwise the back end wont follow the front, and the tyres are good 225's so their not skinny 15's

All fair points. Ive never personally owned a car with a spool stealthy thanx for clearly that one up for me. I'm gonna go for a lokka in my ute as getting defects passed where i work is not a hassle at all lol. It pays to be nice to the older mechanics at work.

In SA its more oh a hassle. $70 for an inspection, then they give you a list of stuff they want you to fix (like putting in 3 child restraints....lol) and then pay them another $70 to check it.

sorry for the hijac. Im trying to get a minispool taken out of a vr stato. It belongs to a mate of mine, he cant handle the spool. Nearly kills himself coz he is a **** driver. Had a quote today for $450 plus parts for removal. That makes no sense to me. How much should i be looking at?

    That sounds right

Its about $3-400 for fitting one (plus the spool) so it makes sense

    ^^ ah fair enough then
Maybe ill just buy a diff from the wreckers and swap the 2 over. Cheaper, with 300,000kms on the stato anything i buy will have lower KMS on it

its not so much money as an issue, its that my mate is tight and lazy. I could always swap the diff from my calais into his stato, and ill have the spool lol

This is meant for padrickz88 im not trying to hijack i just dont know how to send something to just him yet. If anyone could tell me how that'd be awesome. Its pretty easy to do yourself. If you wanna give it a go and have no idea you could always keep a manual on standby but you should be sweet. Take rear cover off diff, wheels off, caliper undone and moved out the way, disc off, undo four bolts for the axle and if you still cant slip the axle far enough due to handbrake or whatever you can undo a couple of bolts and take off the handbrake cable then move whole backing plate up out of way. Then repeat for other side. Undo the four main bolts holding the centre in slip her out. Keep everything from each side away from the other side so as not to mix it up. Undo the bolts holding the gear to the old centre. Carefully and evenly tap the gear off with punch and hammer. the put on new centre and reassemble the lot. And thats the general gist of it.
