Question Temp. gauge reading

I have a VS series 2 ute with an ecotec V6 engine which has done about 145,000kms. I replaced the temperature sender about 12 months ago and now every time the ignition is turned on the temp. gauge reads off the scale (past the highest point). I know that it isn't due to the engine being hot as you only have to turn the ignition on for this to happen. If anyone has ideas on how to rectify this problem it would be much appreciated.

It sounds like the wiring is earthing, have you connected it back on properly.
Does the reading stay high all the time.

Two questions:
1....did you fit the correct replacement sensor and not a generic
2....has the gauge misread precisely from the day the new sensor was fitted.

wont be that cause he said it happens when he turns the ignition to on. If it happened while driving then i would suggest what you said

anyway id say wiring is dodgy somewhere (short?)

Please read the original post again - he says it happens when he turns the ignition to on - there is no mention that it goes "normal" when driving.

The reading does stay high all the time, it doesn't move at all until the ignition is turned off again.

Try replacing the original sensor - for the gauge to read hot continuously there must be a dead short either in the sensor or the wiring but if you haven't touched the wiring then that gets back to the sensor - check the 2 terminals for continuity. For under $10 you can buy a digital multimeter that will measure this for you plus if you read the accompanying instructions you'll find the multimeter a handy item.
